D-Mannose in pregnancy?

BatPrint · 20/04/2021 09:46

Has anyone taken D-Mannose in pregnancy? I used to take it for UTIs pre-pregnancy and it was amazing. My doctor has said it's not recommended in pregnancy probably due to lack of research. Have read mixed advice online. Just wondering if anyone has taken it during pregnancy or been given different advice?
Currently on second antibiotic to try and clear UTI symptoms even though urine culture has come back clear of infection. Getting fed up of constantly feeling uncomfortable Sad

Having the same issue. 5 WK 3 days pregnant and my bladder is irritiated. I used to take 2 dmannose a day + probitiocs . Ive asked my nurse so will let you know what she comes back with ! Have you taken some pain killers?

FeistySheep · 21/04/2021 16:09

Could you try to just eat loads of the fruit and veg which contain it naturally? That way you should be getting at least some of the dose you were getting from the tablets - do you know how much D-mannose they had in them?

I’m 9 weeks and just been diagnosed with a urine infection and thrush at same time! Got to take antibiotics which I know is going to make the thrush worse. Would be interested to hear about d mannose as not sure about the research - whether it is proven.

Just an update, midwife / my fertility nurse specialost has confirmed probiotics and dmannose safe to take in pregnancy . Turns out I dont have an infection though as urine was negative, but the hormones prob causing the irritation, hoping it resolves asap

Thanks for the replies everyone.

@PaddyG that's interesting, are you in the UK? Have now seen it's on the NHS website that D-Mannose is not recommended in pregnancy Sad

@FeistySheep I'm trying to eat lots of fruit and veg, but I'm not sure you can get the same amount by just eating fruit and veg? That's what I've picked up from googling anyway!

My midwife suggested I take it in pregnancy. I stopped after a little while as my hg was getting worse, was actually the pregnacare that was making it worse.

georgarina · 23/04/2021 02:13

According to what I've seen it's regarded as safe?

I get a lot of UTIs so I've been taking it - already had to take a course of UTI antibiotics this pregnancy so would definitely rather stick to probiotics and d-mannose than have to take them again

BatPrint · 23/04/2021 05:55

I'd much rather take D-Mannose than antibiotics too. This second course has made me feel a bit better but still don't feel completely right. I don't see why D-Mannose wouldn't be safe, but this is the bit from the NHS website, which is worrying me!

I wonder why it isn’t recommended in pregnancy, maybe due to sugar? Could you speak to midwife about it. Good luck OP, I know I would end up with a UTI if I stopped taking dmannose.

Unfortunately my symptoms got worse and my bladder was in so much pain last night so I've had to start the antibiotics which has calmed things . Not sure if it's a placebo or not but its defo improved my symptoms . I'm thinking it was just irritated but last night turned into an infection . I'm just going to take probiotics for now and leave off the dmannose , might try and drink some 100 percent cranberry juice . I'm pretty sure I've got this infection from stopping the dmannose to begin with or just the pregnancy. I've got an anverted uterus so my uterus sits right on my bladder. Lucky me

Jenn9875 · 04/05/2021 18:56

Hi there, @batprint @PaddyG can I ask if you took D Mannose while TTC? I've read some info suggesting it may inhibit conception so wondering whether it's ok to take it during that time. Any insight you have would be appreciated.

Thank you

PaddyG · 04/05/2021 20:43

@Jenn9875 I've stopped taking it unfortunately. I went to see my urologist privately last week and he was pretty rude and told me to suck up any bladder pain and take paracotmel in first trimester if needed but nothing else apart from antibiotics, I had a week of nitrofurantoin which cleared up the infection . He told me to go down the diet route instead and thats improved things and I've also stopped drinking tap water and switched to drinking evian which came up on the interstitial cystitis board . Bladder doesnt feel right but not painful and irritation comes and gos , I'm hoping after first trimester it gets better , 5 weeks to go xx

PaddyG · 04/05/2021 20:54

@jenn9875 sorry I misred your question ..yes I took it twice a day while ttc and I'm pregnant now lol ..I checked with my gynae when ttc and he said it was fine

lilifleitas · 08/06/2021 19:43

@PaddyG,
I am TTC since 3 months and take 2g of D manosse after each intercourse. How many grams were you taking per day when trying?
Thanks

PaddyG · 08/06/2021 21:44

I took 2 capsules a day and I've taken it a few times in pregnancy also as it turns out it's fine in pregnancy, its just a type of sugar . I've actually had such bad problems with my bladder in pregnancy I'm under a chronic uti clinic in Harley st who are treating me xxx

FreshMintTea · 19/04/2022 07:59

Hi! I was wondering how this turned out for you all, as starting to experience something similar now. @PaddyG, @BatPrint, @Roselilly36, @georgarina, would you be able to share your experiences from last year and any further advice? Thank you !

Shortjen · 20/05/2022 00:10

I know this is much too late for you but I wanted to say that, I think they have now removed this bit from the NHS website and it just says talk to your doctor instead.
