Just wondering how long your second labours were compared to your first? Im on baby number 2, first baby was 15hours. Are the second labour's much quicker?

I don’t really know. When do you count it starting? And when do you count it ending? Is it the official version or your own perception?

With my first baby it would be 2.5 hours if you count from when I first felt a contraction to placenta out. But it could also be described as 1 hour 20 as that was the time between me ringing for help and the baby being born. Or, you can go with the official version which is 12 minutes as written in my notes - and that included 9 minutes for the placenta.

Second baby you could say it was 7.5 hours if you count from when my waters broke to placenta out. But if you mean from first contraction to baby, that was 1 hour 45. Official version says 2 hours 30 as I had a natural third stage so it took 45 minutes for the placenta.

That means if you go by maternity notes my second labour was 13x longer than my first.

Waters ~3am
Contractions ~7:30am
Birth 11:30
First Labour over 30 hours!

I get what you mean, everyone will describe differently. Mine was 30hrs from the start of painful contractions that woke me up at 4am. I can see PP above has put 30hrs for their labour but clarified that most of that time was without pain, so a completely different 30hrs experience!

1st - 6.5hrs. 2nd - 1.5hrs. I'm now due my 3rd baby in just over 2 weeks and expecting a quick birth with this one.

Ava50x · 11/04/2021 21:15

First 3 hours
2nd 2 hours
3rd 4 hours!!
None of them difficult labours. Supposedly second births are quickest and easiest so hopefully you'll be in luck!

ohidoliketobe · 11/04/2021 21:19

DC1 - 20 hours
DC 2 - 5 hours
Both from contractions starting in middle of night to baby born (no slow labour, waters breaking, days of cramping etc for me)
DC2 I delayed going into hospital as thought as more time, and she was almost born in the car. Midwives managed to get me into a side room and and she was born within minutes.

Pregnant with DC3 and due any day, we are setting off for hospital as soon as I get any sign of labour!

Neighneigh · 11/04/2021 21:19

1st - 6hrs, 2nd - 1hr 45m, both at 38 weeks

Chasingsquirrels · 11/04/2021 21:20

About 15mins from 1st contraction.

LolaNova · 11/04/2021 21:23

First was 37 hours from waters breaking to birth (only made it to 9cm and got stuck there so had a cesarean in the end). It was 17 hours from ‘established labour’ to birth.

Second was 9 hours from waters breaking to birth. About 5 hours from established labour.

TankGirl97 · 11/04/2021 21:24

1st: 33 hours
2nd: 1hr 45 mins
3rd: 3 hours
All measured from first contraction. Second was my biggest baby too.

I know a few people who had unexpected home births/car births with the second, they often seem to be surprisingly fast!

optimistic40 · 11/04/2021 21:28

First nearly 40 hours
Second half an hour

NatalieH2220 · 11/04/2021 21:36

I never really know when you're supposed to count from but:

1st baby 8 hours from waters breaking. Contractions started a couple of hours after

2nd baby 2.5 hours from waters breaking. Had contractions a couple of hours prior but not really painful until about an hour after waters went

kittlesticks · 11/04/2021 21:40

1st = 24 hours
2nd = 1 hour 😳

Merename · 11/04/2021 21:41

1st 40hrs, 2nd 2.5hrs. (With a 10lb5er). Good luck!

Goodtohear · 11/04/2021 21:57
