Has anyone had a smaller baby 2nd preg

Hi,

My son was born 10 days early at 10lb 1oz, he was in distress and delivered via planned c-section earlier than initially planned due to this.

I was 27, normal BMI. No gestational diabetes and I am 5"5 and was 12st at 9 months pregnant. (Normally was 10st)

I'm 21 weeks with DS2 and will be having extra growth scans, they just assume he will be big too. I haven't had my gestational diabetes test yet. I'm high risk as DM and DSis are both type 1

I'm just wondering if anyone's had their second baby be smaller, if you've had a larger baby first time around?

I ate perfectly healthy first time around, I've relaxed abit this time mostly due to lockdown etc. Still eating okay, though I'm a stone heavier due to subsequent weight gain in 2020 lockdown.

Ds2 was a week earlier than Ds1 and was a couple of ounces lighter. DS3 was late and was 2lb heavier (no gd, unusual weight gain etc).

Sorry

I had an average 7lb 7oz at 39+6 1st time. 2nd was 10lb 12oz at 40+5 but had a fairly east VB after slow labour with just 15mins pushing (shoulders got a bit stuck). 3rd was 9lb 10oz and was a breeze after her brother despite having a big head. 4&5 were twins 8lb 5oz and 8lb 11oz at 38wk via elcs as breech. Had GTT in last 3 pregnancies and was within normal ranges. I expect this one will be a bigger baby too, my consultants said I'm a good candidate for vbac but I will not get any growth scans unless fundal height measures ahead later on, 21+2wk atm and will be checked at 28wk. I have to have GD testing again but not sure when.

3rdcwas born at 40+2

PulledPineapple · 08/04/2021 12:49

Both DC born 1 week late, DS1 9lb 1, DS2 7lb 3

crispychicken12 · 08/04/2021 12:53

Thanks so much for the responses, I'm likely to have a c-section again. I just wondered if there was a possibility DS1 was just super big but this one might not be.

DS1's pregnancy was super intense towards the end, I was huge.

@crispychicken12 - my first was 7 pounds something and second was around 6 pounds x

Blabla81 · 08/04/2021 13:07

My first was 8lb 10 and my second was 7lb 9. I hardly put on weight with my first but put on lots with the second.

CaptainSpirit · 08/04/2021 13:34

My second was quite a bit smaller - DD1 was 7lb11 born at 41 weeks and DD2 was 5lb14.5 born at 38 weeks.

ladygindiva · 08/04/2021 13:37

Not myself but my best friend had a 10lb first baby( a few days early) and her second was 8lb(a few days late) Different dads though. Apparently she herself was 10lbs born too.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 08/04/2021 13:38

Technically yes. DD1 was 7lb 8 born at 41 weeks, DD2 was 6lb 5 but delivered by ELCS at 37 weeks.

parsnipsnotsprouts · 08/04/2021 13:41

My two were exactly the same weight weirdly at the exact same gestation

mangomama91 · 08/04/2021 13:53

Yes I did.
My first was born at 40 +5 and 7lb 7oz
Second was born at 39 + 5 and 5lb 14

I knew my second was going to be smaller as I had to have growth scans from 32 weeks

rooarsome · 08/04/2021 13:54

In order I had DD, DS1 and DS2. My middle child was the largest, last one the smallest (and the one I had GD with!)

fizbosshoes · 08/04/2021 13:58

My DS (2nd baby) was a few ounces lighter than DD 7lb 4 v 7lbs 12 but his head was bigger. I put on weight more quickly in 2nd pregnancy and was showing earlier but actually about half a stone lighter in the third trimester than with first pregnancy.

WireFan · 08/04/2021 14:01

Yes, both my DC were born just a few days before EDD. 2nd DC was over half a pound lighter than my 1st child.

MissSmiley · 08/04/2021 14:22

My first was 9lbs 1oz
Second 8lbs 2oz
Then twins for they don't count
Fifth baby was 9lbs 9oz

I don't think your second will necessarily be bigger

Xaxnxdxrxexaxandrews87 · 09/04/2021 07:24

I think each pregnancy can be completely different, I am having my third baby. My first was born 7lb5 & 4 days over. My second was born at 38 weeks & was 5lb...
And this one, well I think he will be a big one 🤣 so all completely different xx

Operasinger · 09/04/2021 07:27

Ds1 8lbs 10oz. Ds2 8lbs 4oz.

BalloonSlayer · 09/04/2021 07:41

I have a very old fashioned pregnancy book (Gordon Bourne) which says that babies get bigger with subsequent pregnancies up to a certain maternal age then get smaller.

He says that ' a woman will have her biggest baby at the age of 35.' I had my first at 35, he was 9lbs 9oz. My second and third, born when I was 37 and 43, were both 6lbs 13oz.

I started off at different weights but was always the same weight at 9 months pregnant each time.

With DC3 I was worried the baby was too small, as everyone kept saying the bump was tiny, so I was referred to the consultant. He was the classic patronising consultant (but I didn't mind for once because I just wanted reassurance) and declared baby was a fine size. When I mentioned how big my first one had been he said first babies are always bigger because first time mums aren't rushing around looking after other children, they have "got the time to lie around eating Mars bars all day." Cheeky bugger but I came out reassured. Grin

autumnboys · 09/04/2021 07:46

Yes. My first baby was 8lb 12 and the second and third were both 7lb 3.5 (not twins). My sister’s first baby was bigger than yours, in really very similar circumstances; her second was smaller as well.

crispychicken12 · 09/04/2021 18:16

I don't mind having another big baby, I would like the chance to have a vaginal birth, or at least experience labour. My son was in distress due to his size and they needed forceps and cut his face, all during the c-section. I'm so grateful he was born safe but I'd love to be able to try natural, but maybe I just grow big babies

ds2 (10 days late) was 1 oz lighter at 9lb 1oz than ds1 who was born on his due date.
