Hyperemesis in subsequent pregnancies

Hi,

I had HG in my last 2 pregnancies so far I’m 5w3d and still no HG, I’m wondering; can you get away with subsequent pregnancies not having HG or am I too early yet (I can’t remember specifically when it started in my last two)?

Thanks!

I believe I had no sickness or nausea whatsoever with baby number 2. Until 7 weeks on the dot. Then was in and out hospital until 20 weeks or so for hyperemesis. I wish I had something more positive to share in statistics but think there was a big HG study and it was a seriously high percentage of women who have had HG will develop it in the future.

Oh dear. I was quite poorly in both but learnt to manage much better in 2nd pg so hopefully I’ll be a pro this time round Wink

I had HG in all 3 of my pregnancies but each one was slightly less bad than the previous. I hope you're luckier this time.

Research shows you're highly likely to have it again, but it's not guaranteed. I'm in my second pregnancy with it but haven't been as bad as my first, I think that's just because I started medication at 5 weeks though and ramped up meds quickly etc. Whereas first time round I was clueless and waited too long before I got medical help leading to hospitalisation etc. Contact Pregnancy Sickness Support for advice. I would be contacting your GP ASAP for preventative anti-emetic medication. If you don't get HG/sickness you can just come off it in a few weeks time, but there is good research that starting meds prior to symptoms starting massively reduces your chances of having full blown HG/reduces symptom severity - which I'm sure is why I've managed to avoid hospital this time around.

Good to know. Ah yes, as soon as a got the BFP I got the meds, no messing around.

@MeadowHay I didn’t realise taking the meds before symptoms would help, that’s interesting!
