Dog poo in home

Hello!
I’m 17 weeks pregnant nearly 18 and I have a dog who’s 2 and a half, she’s very well trained and a brilliant dog and she never ever goes in the house! But tonight my partner and I were sitting in the living room and she was in the kitchen having food when all of a sudden we heard like a farting noise (pity for her haha) but she had diarrhoea all over the kitchen floor! Bless her she didn’t make it in time to tell us she needed to go outside so there was loads and loads all over the floor, my DP used gloves and antibacterial wipes all over the floor, put the wipes in a doggy bag then put them in a black bag and straight outside and I’ve mopped twice afterwards with antibacterial spray but it’s set my health anxiety off a little bit now and I feel my DP must have stepped in some particles and dragged it through the house, I just feel like it’s not clean!
How do you pregnant ladies clean up dog poo that’s happened in the house safely and know that’s it’s clean and sanitised afterwards?

TIA!

In all honesty, exactly the same way as before I was pregnant. Clean and then anti bac sounds good enough to me! I know cat poo is a different kettle of fish due to toxoplasmosis risk, our neighbour's cats are forever pooping in our front garden (which I hate) so I ask DH to pick those up but I still clean up the occasional accident that our elderly dog has indoors.

Pick up with wipes, personally chuck the gloves etc in the bin.
Get old rag/towel boiling hot water and bleach to wash over a few times.
Finish with zoflora and dry.
It’s not a nice thing to happen but these things happen when you have pets.

You’ve got to think about how germs actually work. It sounds like you’ve both been very thorough but even if there were ‘particles’ left in the house, they’re not big enough to hurt you. Your immune system fights off a crazy amount of bacteria and viruses each day. To actually get ill from something, you have to ingest amore than a particle. Also, bear in mind that bacteria won’t live long on otherwise clean surfaces so these particles are probably already dead.

If there’s no poo visible and the area has been cleaned with antibac even once - let alone 3 times - I think you’re all good Smile

And I’m telling you this as someone who suffers with health and germ anxiety, quite mildly now due to therapy but it used to be really severe.

Congrats on your pregnancy btw Flowers

You've already done all that you need to do.

Relax, all will be fine. Hopefully your dog will feel better now and not have a repeat.

Meh, dogs are breeding grounds for bacteria which is great, imho. Being continually exposed to bacteria is healthy for us and helps our immune systems. I too would sanitise the floor after the pooing incident, but only once!

The dog licks its bum, then you. Or it licks its bum, then licks its fur, and you touch its fur. Either way, bacteria on you!

I don't mean to be unsympathetic, but try not to worry about it too much. It'll be fine ☺️

Oh no poor dog. Don't worry it sounds like you cleaned it well. No house is perfectly germ free as we track things in from outside but it's not a problem. In my first pregnancy I volunteered in a wildlife hospital till 30 weeks; mostly cleaning out the cages so lots of poo and a lot of the animals were unwell. My doctor just said wear gloves and if you can't then wash your hands very regularly.

Thank you every one! I know bless her, my partner gave her lots of cuddles while I mopped the floor! She seems fine in herself not sure wether she had something on her walk today that upset her belly or it was the food because we’ve recently changed it but she seems good now! I don’t have bleach in the house 😩 I’ll have to get some tomorrow!
Thanks guys, I always had anxiety but it’s well and truly come out since being pregnant and I wasn’t really worried about germs until just now when she went in the kitchen 🙈
Yeah and that’s very true about tracking in bacteria from the outside, I do clean regularly and mop but still very true! I’m just a bit worried about infections more than anything from the dog poo!

I didn’t handle the poo myself either my partner did all that but I’ve touched things that he’s touched (before he started cleaning I asked him and he thinks he didn’t touch the spray I used after him after he cleaned the mess just before he started to clean and put the gloves on) but stupid me after touching the spray he used I wiped my mouth like my upper lip and I can’t remember if I washed my hands I between that and touching my mouth! I’m blaming pregnancy brain and my normal brain because I’m so forgetful it’s beyond! But that’s panicked me a little too maybe I got some of it in my mouth or something! Just so worried about infection!

Don’t worry about wiping your mouth. You probably washed your hands but if you didn’t, it’s still fine. Any bacteria transferred won’t be enough to harm you.

You sound like you might have OCD or severe anxiety. It might be worth looking into some therapy if it’s an option for you.

Krazynights34 · 29/03/2021 23:42

Well, erm, you wipe your bum after a poo and are quite likely to be more sensitive to human bacteria than animal..?
I think your DH has done enough

Shreddedwheaties · 30/03/2021 09:52

I do have anxiety (never been told about OCD before) but it wasn’t bad until I got pregnant at all! Yeah I think it would be if I carry on feeling like this but I really didn’t think anything much about germs to be honest until last night when she went in the kitchen had a bit of a freak out! Feeling much better about it this morning!
@Krazynights34 I do yes, I don’t particularly now maybe we are...
Yeah he did I never said he didn’t, plus he was the one who insisted on cleaning it so I didn’t have too. I didn’t make him get on his hands and knees and scrub 😂
