12 week scan - unable to get measurements

Hi there

I had my 12 week scan today. Previously had private scan at 7 weeks for reassurance due to previous miscarriage and then 9 weeks for bleeding. Baby was very active and in awkward position meaning sonographer couldn't get NT measurement and the CRL she said was difficult but did her best...

I've been told now I cannot have screening tests due to baby not cooperating and my dates have moved back a day.

I feel really anxious and upset. I am just wondering if anyone has had this before? They said don't do rescans.

Thanks xx

Hi,
This happened to me on Wednesday I got offered a blood test instead which I have to come back for when I'm 15 weeks.

xem87 · 25/03/2021 22:23

Hi @kayd90 🙂
Yes that's what they said to me. I've just read on NCT if cannot get measurements or screening you should be offered second scan.

The blood test I don't think is as accurate xx

Yes I've also heard it isn't as accurate, I wasn't given a option of a second scan. I was going to see the outcome for the blood test and if high risk I will most likely pay for a harmony test, to put my mind at ease.

Cafeaulait27 · 26/03/2021 07:54

I would push for a second scan - maybe check what it says on the nhs website and cite that if it says you should be offered one?

It’s very unfair not to offer you one!

xem87 · 26/03/2021 08:03

@Cafeaulait27 - I agree! Honestly I hardly slept last night just worrying. I think it's maybe just me being over anxious because of previous miscarriage. I'm now worrying why baby measuring behind then all the what ifs. I have sent feedback to the hospital via the patient liaison service. No reply yet. Unsure how else to escalate it xx

Just to reassure you on one point op, all 3 of my pregnancies have been dated as later than I calculated based on my period, the largest change being 3 days. Still pregnant with no 3 but 1&2 are both healthy. Hope you’re able to get a second scan.

ivfbeenbusy · 26/03/2021 08:32

I had this with my twins

I paid to have the measurements and blood test done privately in the end as they just keep going until they get the measurements unlike the NHS which only attempted twice at the same appointment and didn't even bother to try again on a different day

I also paid to have the NIPT test x

Lou98 · 26/03/2021 11:10

I had this at my 12 week scan in November, baby wasn't cooperating so couldn't get measurements. I don't know anybody that was offered a second scan for this, although maybe varies by trust? I had the blood test. It comes back with whether you're a low risk or high risk for DS, if high risk then I believe they offer further testing (mine came back low so not sure 100% on what tests).

Don't worry about measuring behind, I had 3 private scans before my 12 week scan (previous mc so was very cautious) and measured differently at them all. They'll stick with the date they give at the 12 week scan. I'm now 31+5 with a, so far, healthy baby

BurningBenches · 26/03/2021 11:14

I had this in December. At my 12wk NHS scan they couldn't get the nuchal measurement, tried weeing, jumping but the whole appointment was very very short. No offer of a rescan and just said you'll have to have the quad test at 16wks or go privately.

So we went private. I am 41, so at the time did feel it was a bit shit, but luckily we could pay to go privately. The private clinic, which was recommended by the hospital, was brilliant, really reassuring, took her time etc.

xem87 · 26/03/2021 11:22

Thank you all xx

Does anyone know how much it costs private? It seems unfair no rescan it's something out of your control which they could easily rescan and hopefully get next time.

BurningBenches · 26/03/2021 11:46

Ours was £200. It was a lot, but I didn't feel I had much choice. Waiting to 16wks at my age wasn't ok. I think if I didn't have the money to go private, then perhaps I would have called and spoken to someone and tried to rebook.

The private clinic saw me the next day, were absolutely brilliant, kind, when I had a huge bleed during the scan offered to rescan me 4 days later for free. Would recommend them in a heartbeat.

WhiteBricks · 26/03/2021 11:54

I'm guessing they just don't have the capacity to rescan at your hospital? Our hospital is quite strict in that if you have an early pregnancy scan but are dated after 10 weeks plus you don't get a second booking scan unless you want nuchal screening. And EPAU won't see a woman unless she's bleeding heavily or in lots of pain. Hope you get sorted though

TheCactusWhackedUs · 26/03/2021 11:58

NHS DO RESCAN... I had one at 12 then at 13 weeks. Push them and don't roll over.

xem87 · 26/03/2021 12:04

@TheCactusWhackedUs - any tips on how you got one? I really don't think I'm being unreasonable just want the screening they offer. If it was my fault for any reason I get it but you can't control what baby is doing 😂

OP posts:
shouldistop · 26/03/2021 12:08

Hmm I had a re-scan of ds2 20 week scan as he wasn't cooperating.

CobleCloud · 26/03/2021 12:15

The exact same happened to me at my 12 week scan they could not get the measurement. My trust did offer me a second scan for a week later so I would definitely try push this. Although I did have my second scan baby was been awkward again and they couldn't get the measurement at the second scan, so I am having to have the blood test at my 16 week midwife appointment next week.

xem87 · 26/03/2021 12:18

@CobleCloud - did they offer it there and then or did you have to fight? I understand if baby still awkward 2 attempts is a fair go. Thank you xx

TheCactusWhackedUs · 26/03/2021 12:18

@xem87 they just did it I didn't ask

Rosieposy89 · 26/03/2021 12:20

Hey, I'm going through this now. I have a third rescan booked for next week, I'll be 15 weeks. Its very common, my hospital said some women have 3 or 4 attempts. I have missed the combined screening window. I will decline the quad as that's just for DS and I believe the other things can be picked up at 20 weeks. My hospital did not hesitate to get me booked in both times, they said its so important to get a due date for other screens. I would request another one and speak to PALS if they refuse. You're not alone, its very frustrating! X

xem87 · 26/03/2021 12:22

Thanks @Rosieposy89 - I emailed pals how I was feeling yesterday they requested my hospital number and DOB this am so hopefully they will help. It's bad you shouldn't have to fight. It's making me so stressed - I checked private £185 for scan I cannot afford that ☹️ xx

JumperooSue · 26/03/2021 12:26

If they managed to measure the baby and date you but not do your NT measurement they will invite you back for the blood tests about 14 weeks to do the quad test for Down syndrome. Our hospital policy is two attempts on the couch on the same day, if they hadn’t been able to date your pregnancy you would be invited back for a scan in your second trimester for dating but if they could then they only need to take the blood next time. Imagine daily how many babies aren’t cooperative, how many appointments are longer than the allocated time for whatever reason, they just don’t have the capacity or appointments to rescan all these people, you’ll still be screened for Down syndrome with the quad test around 14 weeks🙂

CobleCloud · 26/03/2021 12:44

@xem87 they offered me if there and then 😕 so could just be a different trusts thing but I would still definitely try push for one, I'd have felt exactly like you if they hadn't. Xx

PutOnAHappyFace · 26/03/2021 12:55

I had the same thing, baby would not get into the correct position and I was 14 weeks so no chance of a rescan, she also said they could check all day but some babies just lie back into the awkward position everytime. I had the quad test in the end and got results back in 2 days. My last pregnancy was lost due to the baby having down syndrome so this was really stressful but tbh in the end the quad test came back really fast. All the reading I don't about the quad test seemed to suggest it was less effective but not by a lot.

BlueEyedPony · 26/03/2021 12:56

In both my pregnancy's, I had the harmony test (sometimes called the safe test). It's a private test, but arranged through the nhs. Can't remember what it cost though.

Rosieposy89 · 26/03/2021 13:12

@xem87 £185 is a lot of money. Hopefully PALS will sort it out. Try not to worry too much, the positive is there's an active baby with a heartbeat! With the tests, you can have the quad and the 20 week scan will check for everything else. I was a little disappointed I couldn't have the combined screening but more relieved that there was a baby there! I would rather not be having these rescans as I get anxiety every time!
