Booking a private scan to find out the gender?

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone has booked a private scan in the UK in between the 12 week and the 20 week NHS scans to find out the gender? I'm 13 weeks at the moment and am not sure if I can wait until the 20 week scan to find out!
Thanks

Yes I had one at 16 weeks. The gap between 12 and 20 weeks was too long for me and I wanted reassurance that everything was okay, finding out the gender was bonus. It was also really nice to see the baby in loads of detail and it was less rushed and clinical than the NHS scan. I used Ultrasound Direct/Babybond and would recommend them.

Yes i had one at 18 weeks and found out sex of baby, i didnt tell anybody until it was confirmed at 20 week nhs scan

crobo87 · 23/03/2021 12:36

I have one booked for just over 16 weeks x

ginnyisback · 23/03/2021 12:42

We booked ours at 16 weeks and we had the scan on Saturday!

JustYourAverageSue · 23/03/2021 12:44

I had one at 16 weeks but only because the NHS trust where I live won't tell you the gender. It was also nice to have that extra bit of reassurance and mine included a 3D picture too.

MrsLauraM · 23/03/2021 12:50

I had a private scan at 17 weeks. Due to lockdown it was booked as a reassurance scan with gender confirmed if possible. Like a PP has said, I didn’t want to wait a full 8 weeks between scans to check on baby and it was nice to find out the gender a little earlier than originally planned.

MrsB2019x · 23/03/2021 13:30

Yep I booked in for 16+4, I was scanned at 5 weeks and 8 weeks for medical reasons, then the 12 week scan so waiting 8 weeks til the next one seemed so long!

FTEngineerM · 23/03/2021 13:31

Yep 🙋🏽‍♀️Had one at 18 weeks last time and one booked for 16 weeks this time.

Happy babies to you all. But it''s sex not gender you'll be finding out.

Sex is whether it's a male or female (with the vanishingly small intersex).

Gender is how we socialise our kids to go with what the society wants or dictates.

So (as an extreme gender view) let's paint our girl baby's bedroom pink and sparkly, buy her dolls and unicorns, not offer her lego and discourage her from science, exploring or playing games.

Or paint our boy baby's bedroom blue, encourage him to be rufty-tufty and climb trees.

Neither is great for their own development.

And can I ask why you want to know the sex of the baby before it's born?

crosstalk · 23/03/2021 16:08

Sorry, mean to add that if you have a sex linked genetic problem then worth knowing.

May2021Mummy · 23/03/2021 16:08

I had one at 17 weeks

We had one with window to the womb at 16+4wk. They got a good clear look between the legs and got us some lovely photos of baby (inc 4D). Pics at my dating scan were not very clear as she moved every time she pressed the button to take one. Was really nice to see how she'd grown and eased worry as she follows 2 mc's and a few chemicals. My anomaly scan is at 20wk so it broke up the wait nicely.

And can I ask why you want to know the sex of the baby before it's born?

Because I’m impatient.

And, reading the room, every single reply understood the OPs question on ‘did you find out if your baby has a penis or vagina at a scan before 20 weeks?’ if everyone that is part of the conversation understands the colloquialism there’s probably not much point in attempting to police their language use.

@crosstalk You can ask but it's a really stupid question loads of people find out also I'm pretty sure @Ivyleaf72 doesn't need a lecture on the difference between sex/gender everyone else managed to answer it without being condescending

MM1993 · 23/03/2021 20:43

I booked an early gender scan with Window to the Womb - had it last week, was a really nice experience. I was 17 weeks 1 day.

Gender was confirmed as boy - I uploaded some pictures on a thread on here afterwards as although I was also convinced it's a boy, I still had doubts at the back of my mind!

I'm not good with scan pictures and being able to tell the difference - it's all new to me 😂

PFin · 24/03/2021 04:35

Ive had 2 private scans in between 12 and 20 weeks. One I thought something was wrong and wanted a check up and other was a gender scan. In my experience private scans dont seem to be too affected by COVID apart from the usual restrictions rolled out by medical type settings. i.e. masks, no children, wait outside until your called in, 2 metres apart when possible etc.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 24/03/2021 04:38

crosstalk yawn! There’s always one!

jessstan2 · 24/03/2021 07:57

You find out the sex of your baby, not gender.

I didn't know the sex of mine, didn't care one way or the other though.

swiftt · 24/03/2021 08:01

Yeah, I had one in December at 16 weeks. Was a lovely experience and you get so many more photos and videos with a private scan. Would definitely recommend.

Heyha · 24/03/2021 08:12

Yes, it's very common to do so these days, and to have an early scan, and then another later on...a booming industry really now that the option to pay for them exists quite freely.
We didn't with our first but we will have a 16/17 week one with a second as we have so many clothes that we were given for DD that I'd never put on a boy (I don't really believe in gendered clothing and we didn't know what we were having the first time, so I didn't buy lots of frilly stuff, but we had lots of frilly gifts!) that I'll be able to sort them to pass on either by getting rid of the frilly 'girly' stuff OR just by sorting through it where the clothes are going to be wrong for the season for the second child if happens to be a girl.

MyCatLovesFish · 24/03/2021 08:17

Another person here who thought you are finding out the sex not the gender. Gender is not a polite word for sex.

FTEngineerM · 24/03/2021 08:39

😬

The product you purchase is called a ‘gender scan’, it therefore isn’t incorrect for people to refer to it as such.

If I came on here writing a thread about buying a water bottle, would people come and comment that I was using the wrong language and ACTUALLY it’s called a water receptacle.
