UTI at 21 weeks - should I be worried?

I suffered from recurrent UTIs as a teenager but managed to get to 21 weeks without having one. Had some symptoms so went to the GP today and confirmed I do have a UTI. Started taking antibiotics, however I was aware that UTIs can be dangerous in pregnancy so am a little worried and wanted to hear others’ experiences. I’m also taking progesterone as cervix was found to be shortening last week, plus I’m on aspirin as high risk for pre eclampsia due to family history, so feel like I have a lot going on at the moment!

UTIs in pregnancy are really common, I had one at about 18 weeks and it cleared up fine. You can feel pretty rubbish though so hope you get better soon. Fingers crossed your pregnancy goes more smoothly after this! X

Yeah I think if it's not treated it can cause problems but like the previous poster said they can be pretty common in pregnancy

Chelyanne · 22/03/2021 18:08

Extremely common and should be fine if treatment starts quickly, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

@Fieldings15 thanks so much, I also had bleeding at around 12 weeks and turned out I had a polyp on my cervix, and BV as well! Feels like there’s always something. Glad to be on the antibiotics though and fingers crossed it clears up quickly.

@Chelyanne @Greenrubber thank you, knowing it’s pretty common puts my mind at rest. Have started the antibiotics now so hopefully that sorts it x

You’ll be fine OP, it’s when they go untreated that it’s an issue.
With my first baby I had a uti from conception to all the way to 15 weeks Blush

MintGreenLife · 22/03/2021 18:27

@Mumof1andabit thank you, hopefully I caught it pretty quickly as only started having proper symptoms yesterday, but did have slight lower back tenderness for about a week before. Ah bless you, was yours symptomless then? I’ve read about lots of women finding they had a UTI at a routine urine test x

UTIs are extremely common in pregnancy.
They're not dangerous unless they're left untreated as there's a chance they can become a kidney infection, which is when they're dangerous

MintGreenLife · 22/03/2021 18:35

@SnooperTrooper12345 great thank you x

No problem, I hope you get it sorted ASAP! It really is awful
I had terrible symptoms with mine. Before I got a positive test, I bled because of it. I thought I’d started my period initially!
I was put on all sorts of tablets and I didn’t realise I was pregnant, so I even had courses of two antibiotics which aren’t allowed in the first trimester...only to discover I was pregnant
But thankfully the baby was fine! So I hope that reassures you in some way Smile

MintGreenLife · 22/03/2021 18:50

@Mumof1andabit oh no that sounds terrible! So you just couldn’t shift it then? In the past I’ve always been able to get rid of a UTI with antibiotics so hopefully I find the same now! X

@Mumof1andabit it definitely does ☺️ Anything like this is a worry in pregnancy isn’t it, but it’s good to know it’s common and only a worry if left a long time, and in your case not even a problem then! X

I suffer from recurrent uti too but had in pregnancies 1-4 managed to avoid, somehow.

This one I've had 2 already, one at about 5 weeks and the other around 20 I think. I've been told if I have a third I'll need to take daily antibiotics. I'm 28wks and hoping that they stay away now!

MintGreenLife · 22/03/2021 19:08

@BurningBenches ah bless you, fingers crossed you don’t get any more! I’ve just been for a pee and have a tiny bit of bleeding, which I know can be common with UTIs but also think it could be coming from my vagina rather than urethra 😔 I have a polyp too which caused spotting at 10 weeks, so could be that. Might phone triage and see what they think if I have anymore x
