We had reassurance scan today and baby looked great! However, she said some of the intestines are on the outisde but this is common at this stage and not to worry as they would expect them to go back inside at 12 week scan? Has anyone else had this please who could tell me how it worked out??

Thank you!

How far along were you today for the scan? I’ve not personally got any experience of this, but if the sonographer said it can be normal at this stage I’d try not to worry.

Sorry, just seen you’re 10 weeks lol.

If you’re concerned you could flag it with your midwife, but I assume you have a 12 week scan booked in by now anyway and it sounds like you’d only need to wait until then anyway to find out what’s happening.

I have heard though of babies being born with their intestines on the outside and it being treatable with an op.

Sending you lots of luck x

I read today the intenstines move into the abdomen by 13 weeks so you still have plenty of time. I wouldn't worry too much if they said it was okay, they wouldn't give you false hope x

I went for a private scan with DS2 at 10 weeks. They told us the same thing and we panicked so much. When I got to the 12 weeks scan the sonographer said that babies intestines etc form on the outside and move inside the tummy by about 11/12 ish weeks. The nhs sonographer said if they saw it at 10 weeks they wouldn’t mention it as it can be normal, but some private scan clinics do mention it to you to follow up which can cause unnecessary stress.

DS’ was no longer on the outside by the 12 week scan. I did ask on here at the time and it happened to quite a few people so please don’t worry. I I’m currently pregnant with DC3 and decided not to have an early reassurance scan as I think waiting til 12 weeks can save a lot more stress sometimes!
