Im 28 weeks pregnant and soon planning to wash all the newborn clothes that I bought or was gifted by friends and family members. Could you give me advice on what kind of washing powder/tablets to use and whether fabric conditioner is ok ?

I hand washed and air dried before baby is here. Now I just use non bio as I always did before.

TitusPullo · 12/03/2021 19:06

You do not need to hand wash everything! I washed everything in Ecover Zero (washing liquid and fabric softener) at 40 degrees but they just had a big recall. Now I just use Persil non-bio and Comfort pure for baby. Our washing machine has a baby clothes setting but otherwise I’d just use the normal cycle.

I haven’t done this but will wash everything in the same Ariel gel or liquitabs that I use now. I don’t end won’t use non bio on my own clothes as it really does not clean them properly in my opinion (Clothes never smell properly clean and non bio is useless at removing stains) and I don’t see the point in washing the babies clothes in anything different if he or she will be snuggled up to me, wearing clothes and blankets etc, all washed in bio! I certainly won’t be hand washing anything either. I’d say just wash in your usual gel/detergent combo to freshen everything up OP Smile

We use Ariel or Persil powder. Both bio. Non bio doesn’t even exist where we live and babies seem to survive fine. I think bio does wash better, in almost a year of baby we have no stained clothes that haven’t washed out yet

user2021 · 12/03/2021 19:18

I just washed all baby clothes with normal washing powder and fabric conditioner in the washing machine 🤷🏼‍♀️

Munkeenut · 12/03/2021 19:19

Both my DC have had very bad reactions to biological powder so we use non-bio persil, no softener, lots and lots of rinses as their skin gets aggravated by powder build up. Liquid detergent is worse for build up.

I just wash everything in fairy non bio and stick to using that as its for sensitive skin.
Have done with all my other babies.
You certainly don't need to hand-wash stuff

Chelyanne · 12/03/2021 19:26

Any non-bio detergent and a sensitive conditioner in the washing machine.

BertieBotts · 12/03/2021 19:28

I just wash everything as normal with normal detergent and fabric softener that I use for all our other clothes.

Both of my children have been fine with this.

Bourbonbiccy · 12/03/2021 19:31

I hand wash his clothes, spin them and then air dry them.
I use fairy non bio and the white comfort with a bit of anti bac laundry liquid.

I wash them before he wears them as well.

Mummyof2Terrors · 12/03/2021 19:33

Wash everything as normal. You won't have time to do any hand washing once baby is here.

When they're covered in food post weaning you have to be fairly harsh to get stains out!

Chunkymenrock · 12/03/2021 19:38

Just wash in machine as normal with a gentle non bio. A very small amount of fabric conditioner only, or none at all. Sod handwashing!

PandaBabyJuly · 12/03/2021 19:53

Machine wash; fairy non bio and the comfort white fabric softner (it has a baby on the front lol) but only because I'm allergic to other brands ... then i tumble dry

TitusPullo · 12/03/2021 21:20

Bio makes me really itchy so I didn’t want to take the risk with the baby. Personally I think non-bio cleans just fine.

PenOrPencil · 12/03/2021 21:25

It never occurred to me to wash baby clothes in a different way to anything else! I don’t use fabric softener because I don’t like strong artificial smells, so just any old washing powder really.

wouldukissafrog · 12/03/2021 21:31

Washed all ours with fairy washing powder in the machine

Theyarealltaken · 13/03/2021 14:07

Thanks ladies !!!! Do you iron the clothes too? I’m going green thinking about ironing million little pieces 😝

OP posts:
Kimye4eva · 13/03/2021 14:15

Absolutely no ironing of baby clothes here!

FoxtrotOscarPoppet · 13/03/2021 14:20

Fairy non bio powder
Comfort Pure softener
40 degree machine wash
Step away from the iron 😁

PippityChippity · 13/03/2021 14:22

I don’t iron my own clothes (Unless OH needs a shirt for a nice occasion/going out for dinner etc and then he does it most of the time Grin), let alone going through the trauma or trying to iron teeny tiny baby clothes!

Caspianberg · 13/03/2021 15:37

Iron? Haha no

chelle862 · 13/03/2021 15:46

Non bio and comfort pure here. Iron everything apart from tights and socks.

happymummy12345 · 13/03/2021 16:07

We only use fairy non bio for all washing because I don't like strong smelling washing powder.
I just washed baby clothes in the machine on the baby clothes cycle.
I never bothered washing anything before the baby was born though, I didn't even know it was a thing until I read it on here.
I iron everything except bras and socks as I hate creased clothes. So yes to ironing
