When is dating scan most likely to happen?

I know it’s between 11-14 weeks, but just wondered if they usually wait to after 12 weeks according to LMP.

For me 12 weeks falls on Thursday April 1st, and then it’s Easter. Do you think it’s likely my scan will be at 13 weeks after Easter or on the week where I’ll be 11+4 on Easter week?

I’ve had a few losses and me and my husband decided we’d both take the day off work so we can process if it’s bad news- however the week after Easter a lot of my colleagues already have time off so I wouldn’t be able to book a day off.

Is it possible to change the date of the 12 week scan if it’s not possible? I know it’s very much ‘you get the date you’re given’ but I’m worried I’ll have to say I have a doctors appointment at work and then go back to work if it’s bad news without anyone knowing what’s going on 😔

Would love to know when others scans happened and whether it was possible to rearrange, even though I know it varies from trust to trust.

Thanks xx

If anything goes wrong then you take compassionate leave and do not worry about booking days off.
Hopefully all willbe well and you'llbe skipping in to work anyway. The sonography work through Easter so could be any date really but should be before 14wk if you want the NT test.
Good luck with your scan.

Mine is tomorrow, I'll be 12+6. I have booked 3 hours off work but obviously if it's bad news I will not be going back. I think it would be possible to rearrange but I would try and take when offered. Why don't you tell your employer what is going on as there is less pressure then to cover it up. I appreciate it depends on your relationship with them. For context, we had IVF in November that failed and then conceived naturally soon after. I was completely upfront with my manager about the IVF and told her as soon as we got the BFP as I couldn't deal with the pressure of having to cover up any bad news. Also any antenatal appointments are paid time off so its better to tell them about the pregnancy

Hi OP, congratulations on your pregnancy and I'm so sorry about your previous losses.

Unfortunately it is very hard to rearrange a scan date, or at least it is in my area. I'm afraid if you can't get time off one of your only options may be to tell your work about your pregnancy. I'm sure you already know they have to let you have time off for the appointments. I think this is why it's unlikely your scan date will be changed, these appointments are protected so not being able to get time off work isn't really an excuse.

I'm currently off work after finding out I had a missed miscarriage a few weeks ago and I did have to tell my employer after that even though I didn't want to, luckily for me they have been lovely. Are you worried about what your employers will do/say? Have they not been very sympathetic in the past?

Cafeaulait27 · 10/03/2021 11:01

Thanks guys for your replies. At my work it’s known that those in charge discriminate against women who get pregnant (ie they miss out on promotions, don’t get pay rises, don’t get taken seriously etc) so I don’t want them to know until I know it’s more likely everything will be ok (probably at 20 weeks).

I know it sounds crazy but sadly this is how my work is although they would never admit it, things are done very subtly. The managers are all men and they’re just very old school (sexist twats)

I’m kind of just hoping it will be before Easter, but I feel like that’s unlikely. or at least in the afternoon after Easter so I can just take the rest of the afternoon if it’s bad news. Xxx

My ‘12 week’ scan has actually been booked for when I’ll be just over 14 weeks.

Tried phoning to bring it forward a little as I want the nt and screening, but the trust is so busy in every hospital that the appointments they give out are literally the earliest slots they have. They brought mine forward by 2 days as they’d had a cancellation but it still makes me 14 weeks!

Thankfully I’m having a private nipt test and scan this week anyway while I’m 12 weeks

Cafeaulait27 · 10/03/2021 11:03

@Madeoftea I’m so sorry for your loss 💔 I’m very worried about a mmc.

Yes I’d rather my employer didn’t know I was trying, I’d rather just tell them when I’m further down the line and a bit more confident that things are ok xx

@Rosieposy89 good luck for your scan tomorrow!

Yes I think I will just have to see... hope it’s at least in the afternoon xx

Sorry about your losses - I know that makes it extra worrying. I think it's more likely it will be after Easter than before - from what I can tell they'd rather not have you turn up too early as then they have to bring you back in. They don't move them very readily either. Have you considered a private scan at 11 weeks? If you can afford it that might let you and DH have the time off to go together at a time of day you choose and then you could go to 12 week scan alone if needed. At 11 weeks your chances of a successful pregnancy are pretty much the same as at 12 weeks so you should be in a good position. I had to go to my 12wk scan on my own because of COVID and it was pretty terrifying after having bad news before so I can understand where you're coming from.

Cafeaulait27 · 16/03/2021 11:48

Hey guys - just thought I’d send a quick update! Got the scan appointment through for 1st April which is great, I’ll be bang on 12 weeks. Hopefully this means we’ll know either way when we visit my husbands parents on the Sunday for Easter (hope we can give them good news).

I was really surprised but relieved to get it before Easter, my husband and I have booked the day off work. Hope it’s not a bad omen that it’s on April fools day! Xxx

I've had three 12 week scans.
They have been completely varied. 11+4, 12+2 and this time was 13+2

If something bad does happen, you shouldn't have to go into work after.
I certainly wouldn't be. And I'm sure your work would understand!
Pretty sure you can take leave for that

Cafeaulait27 · 16/03/2021 12:23

Hey @SnooperTrooper12345 thank you! It’s just that I don’t want to tell them I’m pregnant / losing a baby yet. Once they have it in their head someone is trying for a baby they can be quite discriminatory (in subtle ways) and I would just rather keep it to myself until I know the baby is going to be ok.

So if it’s bad news, I don’t really want to have to tell them. Hopefully it’ll be good news though!

We’ve booked the day off so we can just chill - haven’t taken any holiday since Christmas as it’s been kind of pointless during lockdown but it’ll be nice to be off work from Thursday - Tuesday xx

Well it’s one week today until my scan! 11 weeks today, still off my food, sore boobs and tired.

Still haven’t had any scans at all... needless to say I’m nervous! But excited that it’s nearly time. Hope it’s good news xx
