For a relative who is just about to leave her fertility clinic - what was your experience from start to finish with a high risk pregnancy? Where you supported?

@Disabrie22 this is my first pregnancy and I’m classed as high risk due to family history of pre eclampsia and also history of cervical surgery. I think it really depends on why you’re classed as high risk in regards to what additional support you get. I’m taking aspirin for the pre eclampsia side of things, and having bi-weekly scans to check my cervix from 18-24 weeks, but I personally don’t have any additional support - i.e consultants phone number to ask questions etc x

I've had growth scans every 3/4 weeks from 26 weeks as well as the 12 and 20 week ones. I always see a consultant afterwards. When I give birth I will have continuous monitoring so that limits my choices a bit in terms of birthing "experience".

This is because I'm deemed high risk for having a previous c section a higher bmi and gestational diabetes.

I would imagine it will he slightly tailored to each person depending on what makes them high risk. I've felt wonderfully supported and the extra scans have been a great reassurance. Can't imagine seeing them at 20 weeks then thats it till their birthday!!

I was high risk for twins and multiple miscarriages - my experience with the NHS and midwives was brilliant from start to finish especially mid pandemic. Felt very well supported, I did pay for additional private scans up to 16 weeks and then received them as standard every 2-4 weeks due to twins and growth restrictions

Emergency delivery and couldn't fault the care we received

Had 3 high risk pregnancies and classed high risk again this time.
2nd had polyhydramnios and was huge, had 3rd trimester appointments at the hospital with consultant, GTT was repeated. They refused to break my waters when I was 5cm (had started dilating 6 days earlier) due to risk of cord prolapse, it wasn't a problem when they eventually broke my waters the next day anyway.
3rd polydramnios again and a big baby. Consultant led care but birth went smoothly.
4&5 Twins so consultant led care and scans every 4 weeks from my dating scan. They were big girls but carried them to 38wk with few problems (spd and lots of swelling), ended up with cesarean as they were breech and transverse.
This one I have previous large baby (over 4.5kg), previous cesarean. They said I'll only get growth scans if fundal measures ahead. I can choose VBAC or ELCS this time, I have until 36wk to decide.

They don't tend to fuss over you if you're high risk but you have doctors monitoring your care as well as the midwife team so that any problems are dealt with swiftly.
