9 positive tests, most recent being today.. went for a scan today at EPU due to pain (no bleeding as of yet) couldn't find a sac or anything.. had bloods and results came back at hcg levels of 22... due to go for more bloods in 48 hours, can someone give me hope as I haven't been able to fall pregnant in 6 years and I'm scared :(

How many dpo are you? Someone posted a chart of normal ranges of HCG on another thread recently and they vary really widely. It's doubling every 48 hours that's key.

Also can't see much on a scan until 6 weeks.

I don't know as my periods were not regular, I should be over 10dpo at least :(

I can understand the anxiety but why did the EPU even attempted a scan?
There is nothing to see so early on.
I barely had a positive test at 10 dpo...
You need to be patient and wait for a couple of weeks and maybe book a reassurance scan?
Nobody here can give you hope.
Otherwise you could go for repeat hcg blood test to see if it's doubling in 2 days.
But even then... it's so early, literally anything can happen and nothing will be "reassuring"...

Because I've been having pain in my right side ? That's why!

If you're 5 weeks now, 5 weeks, anything above 18 is considered normal. The main thing is that the hcg is increasing/doubling and not the actual number in itself.

Lostinspace23 · 08/03/2021 16:50

Scans early on in pregnancy are very unlikely to give you any clear information and that it doesn’t make sense to seek a scan much before 6 weeks unless there is a suspected ectopic (which is presumably why they saw you). A HCG for level of 22 is consist with 10dpo but very low if you’re 5 weeks. All you can do is wait and see.

In my experience, good early scans and high HCG levels can unfortunately still lead to miscarriage. Personally, I have tended to use clearblue digital as a rough marker of HCG progression via the weeks indicator (not entirely reliable but has worked for me) and then sought a private scan around 7 weeks for reassurance. It isn’t really an EPU role to manage the anxiety of early pregnancy unless you have a history that necessitates their involvement, or pain and bleeding that warrants investigation.

Cafeaulait27 · 08/03/2021 17:23

You’ll need to wait for another blood test to find out if hcg is rising normally as others have said.

Are you on any medication for irregular periods? I have pcos so I take metformin and it’s like a wonder drug, my cycles are now 30 days exactly. I also take myo inositol to help me ovulate.

I hope this pregnancy works out for you xx

Moominmiss · 08/03/2021 17:23

@Natjane1 I wouldn’t worry too much about the hcg number, as others have said it’s only really relevant if you have a second blood test 48 hours later to see if the number is doubling or not.

As for not seeing anything on a scan I found this online regarding what levels you’d need to have for something to be visible

“ Seeing Gestational Sac on Ultrasound
When correlated with hCG levels, a gestational sac should be seen on ultrasound at about 5 weeks when the hCG level has reached about 1500 to 2000.”

Here we go. These aren't my figures and I don't have a source, I copied them off another thread. But you're in a normal range for 3-5 weeks.

Weeks from LMP (Last Menstrual Period)
Approximate amount of hCG (in mIU/ml or IU/l)

3 weeks
5 to 50

4 weeks
5 to 426

5 weeks
19 to 7,340

6 weeks
1,080 to 56,500

7 to 8 weeks
7,650 to 229,000

9 to 12 weeks
25,700 to 288,000

13 to 16 weeks
3,300 to 253,000

17 to 24 weeks (second trimester)
4,060 to 165,400
