Solpadeine soluble pregnancy for headaches

Morning!

Wanted to advice please lovely ladies. I am just over 13 weeks pregnant with my first baby, i’m having a daughter (found out through NIPT) very excited!!!

I have had some headaches through my first trimester, I knew paracetamol was generally ok during pregnancy and due to asthma can’t take ibuprofen anyways. So have reached for the solpadeine 3/4 times.

I had a headache yesterday (still have it this morning grrrr) and I thought i’ll have a solpadeine in water. Anyways when I was getting the tablet out the leaflet fell out the packet so I thought oh i’ll just read it and it says: due to the caffeine content of this product it should not be used if you are pregnant of breastfeeding.

I just think FFS!! Looking at the ingredients the active ingredients are paracetamol 500 mg (standard) and caffeine 65mg.

I mean... are these okay to take? I have taken them already as I mentioned above and I don’t have coffee etc. sometimes a fizzy drink or a herbal tea but certainly not daily.

Everything I pick up or whatever says not safe in pregnancy or check with your GP.

Will this be a problem and does anyone think I could have caused harm in the first trimester?

Thanks everyone!

I know in pregnancy you're supposed to limit caffeine intake. Google says no more than 200mg of caffeine per day - and from what I understand the advice usually errs on the side of caution as they know not everyone will follow it so you can probably safely go over this. Paracetamol is fine in pregnancy and the amount of caffeine you have had is below the recommendation so I think you're fine. I wouldn't worry about this.

Thank you for replying @BaggoMcoys I was quite chilled but my now mind has started running away a little!!

Online it says:

Paracetamol-caffeine is not recommended for use during pregnancy due to the possible increased risk of lower birth weight and spontaneous abortion associated with caffeine consumption.

So my head has now gone a little!! But like you say re the caffeine hoping it’s fine. I’m just really worried as all taken in the first trimester

Try not to worry. Flowers

The concern here is the caffeine but it really doesn't sound as though you've had enough to cause any issues. You've had 65mg at a time and the allowance is 200mg so you're well off. I imagine in some big coffee drinking cultures it would be normal for pregnant women go well above the caffeine recommendations. The pharmaceutical companies probably also err on the side of caution in labelling medications - I read something about this once I think it said that even when medications have been tested and proved safe by others, if the pharmaceutical company haven't done their own tests, they will say something is unsuitable for pregnant women just to avoid lawsuits.

Thank you for all the info!! I’ll try and put it to the back of my mind. You’ve helped to reassure me so thank you I appreciate you replying to me. This is my first time doing this so I feel a bit aaah.

I am sure other pregnant women must have taken this too during pregnancy and been okay (I hope)!!x

I'm glad you feel reassured. I really think you don't need to worry at all about this but I know it can be a scary time. It is a big responsibility to carry a life inside of us! But I think our bodies are pretty smart and it helped me to remind myself that women have been having babies forever, way longer than we have had NHS guidelines etc! The human race has still survived. Congratulations on your pregnancy btw.
