Don’t know what to do with my hair?!

Hello, I’ve been on mumsnet a while but never posted! I was just looking for some advice if possible? And please don’t judge this is as it’s my first pregnancy and just want to know some things if I need to stop doing it and so on?
My hair gets so greasy quick, so I wash it once a week to try and not over wash it, so I use dry hair shampoo the batiste brand and if I run out of that I use talc, so I’ll leave it in my hair I’ll brush it out but I won’t wash my hair for a week then after so it’s all built up too, I also use hair fibres in my hair line because I have alopecia and my hair is really really thin and I have hardly anything on the top!
So I was wondering if I’ve done harm to the baby by leaving it in for a while and not washing it so often?
Please don’t judge I honestly don’t know what I’m doing and the anxiety of being pregnant is crazy (I’ve been referred for counselling because the anxiety is so much) just looking for some advice and help please? Thank you!!

Hello fellow alopecian!! You will be fine. Try not to worry. Dry shampoo or talc won't hurt you or your baby x

Hello! 👋 that’s okay then, I’ve been worrying about it yesterday and today and my midwife has been off this week (always ring her with my silly questions haha) just been thinking about it and I’m 14 weeks so I’ve been doing it for ages now! Just feel like maybe some of the ingredients have gone into my scalp maybe and harmed the baby (I’m not a biologist so I don’t know how it works) but I’m just petrified that because I’ve left it in for like a few days just under a week maybe more sometimes and I know it’s not good for my hair anyways but I haven’t got any of it anyways haha but just worried I’ve hurt baby by like when I’ve sprayed too and Inhaled it and things, sorry long rant just honestly I worry so much and I’m driving myself nuts!

Does anyone else have any advice on this please?

Hello, I also have hair loss and I can tell you that not washing it doesn’t make a difference. Frequent washing won’t cause more hair to fall out. Mine gets greasy quickly too, I wash every other day and I feel much better on the clean hair days as my hair is much bouncier!

There’s also no harm that can be done to baby with any products you put on your hair/scalp xxx

Cafeaulait27 · 05/03/2021 13:47

All hair products, like any other cosmetics, are tested to ensure they are not unsafe for you or an unborn baby. If there was any risk they wouldn’t be able to be sold xxx

@Cafeaulait27 ahh amazing thank you for the advice! I think I’ll start washing it more, I was told by my hair dresser to try not to wash it and only wash it once a week but I feel much better when my hair is clean too so I’ll start washing every day I think, that’s really good too thank you need to put my mind at rest! This pregnancy anxiety is something else x

@Workalldayworkallnight yeah I think hairdressers are not really best placed to talk about things like alopecia. I went to a trichologist who told me this so I hope it helps you 😊 I’m pregnant right now too and worried about my hair loss. Mine is hormonal and the pill helped to slow it a bit, but since weve been trying a haven’t been on the pill for a few years. It’s just rubbish isn’t it! xxx

I really wouldn't worry about leaving it on your head causing any issues.

Personally I wouldn't use talc though - there's a big lawsuit in the US saying it has caused thousands of women to develop ovarian cancer. The science doesn't look particularly robust at the moment to be fair and Johnson & Johnson maintain that it's safe but IARC say it is possibly carcinogenic when used on the genital area, talc deposits have been found in women's ovaries, J&J have just removed from sale in the US and Canada and it's just not a chance I want to take! Also once baby is born it isn't meant to be good to use anyway as breathing it in is bad for their lungs even if it isn't carcinogenic - the packet should have a warning on it saying to keep away from baby's nose and mouth under EU law. Having said that I know it was used on me daily as a child and I seem fine so the risks are probably pretty small even if they do exist so personal choice - just thought you might not be aware it was contentious!

Cafeaulait27 · 05/03/2021 15:13

@BlueberryPancake21 hey! Didn’t know that about talc - but I do know that British testing standards are the same as EU, and are much stricter in many ways than the USA, so I would say talc is still ok, but I’m no expert! Xx

BlueberryPancake21 · 05/03/2021 15:32

@Cafeaulait27 you're absolutely right - UK is same as EU. It isn't banned they just have to have the warning on the packet saying keep away from baby's nose and mouth (J&J says to keep away from baby's face on their baby powder for example) so probably fine as long as not making massive dust clouds!

Workalldayworkallnight · 05/03/2021 20:54

Thanks guys that’s really helpful I’ll stop using talc then! I use it in my hair when I run out of dry hair shampoo (like today) so I’ll wash my hair tonight to get it out, that’s really interesting I didn’t know that! I’ve used talc for years!! Like under my boobs and in between my legs, that’s crazy that they still sell it, it’s going straight in my bin! To note tho I did stop using talc altogether when I found out I was pregnant so about 4 weeks pregnant I was! That talc hasn’t done any harm has it to baby then in the first 4 weeks?
Thank you for the advice and info guys really appreciate it x

@Cafeaulait27 thank you for advice on the hair loss too! I know dry shampoo isn’t good for hair loss but it got so greasy I had to without washing plus it’s so sparse on the top I thought what do I have to lose haha, ahh congrats on your pregnancy! Ahh it is so horrible I’m glad the pill slowed it down, mine is due to the stress my anxiety causes, it is so rubbish would love to have the thick hair I had 7 years ago 😭 xx
