Am I pregnant? Or not? What is going on?

Hi, so this is a lot. I’m very confused. February 6th I miscarried. I was still very early on in the pregnancy (like 4+ weeks) and when I went to the hospital My HCG levels were at 61. I bleed for almost two weeks, maybe a week and a half, but not that much. Had cramps and all that. I stopped bleeding for a few days, had sex (unprotected and my partner and I have been using the withdrawal method). Two weeks later on the 21st I started bleeding, not very much but I was cramping and I got a little freaked out worrying I had an infection. It was on a Sunday so I went to the hospital and everything looked fine and my HCG was at 60. That Wednesday, a few days later, I finally got to see my OB and they confirmed I had passed everything. They did a blood test and my HCG levels were 88. So they increased. (No idea why????) It’s been over a week and I’m testing positive, mild cramping, nausea, I know I ovulated at some point these past weeks, and this morning I have brown spotting. (Still positive test) What does this mean? Am I pregnant again or something? Am I about to start a period but somehow still show positive and my hcg levels are increasing?? Every time I saw a doctor it was pretty far from the last appointment, so I don’t know if my hcg ever got to zero or not. I haven’t had a period. Im devasted by the miscarriage and want to know what’s going on. My OB hasn’t really given me any answers.

I don’t believe your hormones would increase if still miscarrying and brown blood is old blood so a good sign. I’m not going to get your hopes up however things are pointing in the right direction!

I know you’ll be so anxious to find out what’s going on but your best bet is to wait a week, and test then. If you can book a private scan for peace of mind then I won’t tell you not to but if you’re very early on they won’t be able to see much anyway.

Sending love and I’m sorry for your loss. Flowers

I will add aswell my tests turned negative 6 weeks after a termination, not a miscarriage but similar situation. So waiting a week or two to test again is your best bet. x

Thank you for your reply @DinosaurPantz !! I know I sound like an anxious mess but things just kind of aren’t making sense. I don’t really know why it’s decrease and go back up and if I am about to start a period shouldn’t my hcg have gone down?
I test a few days ago and it was positive too. And the lines aren’t faint or anything

Hcg should double every 48-72 hours if a pregnancy is looking viable.

I'd say you need to get a referral (or self refer depending on area you live in) to the epidural to have monitoring bloods.

An increase of less than 50% between blood tests four days apart may be indications that somethings not quite right (one example is ectopic).

Not epidural!!! EPU!

I think I recall mine getting fainter. It was actually the day I was due for a scan to make sure nothing was left behind that I got the negative. Which, is a point actually, if you’re still having positives and cramping it might be worth being referred as said above, you want to make sure baby has passed fully. Flowers

That’s the weird thing is they confirmed that everything at my last appointment. Even though my hcg levels increased, and they didn’t have an answer for that

Everything had passed*. Sorry grammar mistake, I was walking as I wrote this.

Another thing to add, sorry, my cramping went away and the bleeding. The cramping started back up maybe a few days ago. I’m just tired of not know what is going on! I have another appointment with my doctor next Wednesday but it’s agonizing. And it’s just been awful feeling so bad physically and mental since all this happened

Sorry to hear you are going through this @Shannonmuriel. How did they confirm everything had passed to you, did they do a scan?

Shannonmuriel · 04/03/2021 20:18

@Chica1990 yes they did a scan and confirmed it

I am not an expert on this subject, but year ago, whilst pregnant, I began bleeding slightly. My Gp examines me and said my uterus felt far smaller than it should and he couldn’t hear a heartbeat. He suggested I’d had a ‘missed abortion’ as he called it. He explained that the baby could have died but my body thought it was still pregnant. He sent me for an emergency scan but the baby was completely fine and was subsequently born perfectly healthy. I know it’s not the same but either you’re pregnant again or your body still thinks it’s pregnant maybe.

I had a chemical pregnancy back in 2012. It was a long drawn out process where my HCG levels took a long time to get to 0.
On one occasion of testing, my level increased, not by alot, may 20-30. I remember getting my hopes up (i have no idea why as it was an IVF pregnancy so no chance of me conceiving naturally).

Im sorry but HCG levels can fluctuate slightly whilst miscarrying :(
