Antenatal classes - which ones and are they worth it?

I was wondering about attending some antenatal classes to help prepare for birth and afterwards (if possible!). Do people recommend them? I've heard a few negative comments about both the NCT ones (too happy-clappy) and hospital ones - waste of time. Are they worth going to, do you find out anything more than you would from the books?

Cam, the PN co-ordinator's deficiencies were obviously NCT's way of ensnaring you to do the job!

My first baby was born 1975, my last in 1996 and things had definitely improved over the years, thank goodness.

Thanks all,
I think it's good advice about finding friends for after the birth - I'll get in touch with the local NCT - I'm sure I'm going to need all the help I can get!

Pamina, thanks very much for that, I couldn't find a local NCT member so you've just solved my problem. Hey, may see you at the refresher course then (I can't remember anything!!!!). Yes, the Phoebe I saw was in red dungarees and was climbing through as assistant's legs at the time, eagerly making her way towards the garden!! I'm very torn so sending partner to look at the two on Thursday so he can add his side as sometimes they can spot something you can't!
