Early pregnancy bleeding/spotting

Hi all,

This is my first pregnancy so I’m just looking for opinions please. I’m aware I could be worrying over nothing, but I can’t help it.

I’m 6+3 today and since last Wednesday, I’ve been ‘spotting’ light brown/extremely light pink. I say spotting.. it only appears when I wipe, only around once or twice a day. My wee is twinged with brown (so it’s not like full on brown discharge on the paper).

My MIL is telling me not to worry unless it increases or turns pink/red (she’s had many losses herself) and last week, I did call the midwife who just told me to rest and as it’s brown to try not to worry and to take myself to a&e if it increases and turns red.

Google (I know 🤦🏻‍♀️), is suggesting uterus stretching may be the cause and I also wonder if it’s because I’m around my period date.. maybe it’s old blood? I have bad backache at the moment, but I suffered with that immensely before pregnancy, so I’ll not too concerned about that. The bleeding coincides with when my backache started.

I have a private viability scan booked on Thursday when I should be 7 weeks and I’m seeing the midwife for my first appt on 16th.

Has anyone experienced anything similar and it not turned out to be a problem?

Thank you 🙏🏻

Hey and congratulations on your pregnancy! For me, when I had brown discharge at around this time it gradually increased and changed to red and I then miscarried a few weeks later sadly 😔 however while I was going through that time I read loads of other threads where brown spotting just stopped on it’s own and everything was fine with the pregnancy, and even some where it had progressed to red but everything was still ok!

So what I’m kind of saying is it could go either way, but it’s definitely not all over when you see brown discharge. I would call your midwife/gp/epu and ask them although they are unlikely to scan you unless you are having pain or red blood. If it doesn’t progress to red you’re probably fine, so it’s kind of a waiting game to see what happens xx

I just saw you’re asking for stories of when it turned out to not be a problem - so I am sorry if I’ve scared you with my post.

I would say brown is most likely fine as long as it doesn’t progress to red, and even then it can still be fine.

It’s great that you have a scan booked so you can put your mind at rest, let us know how it goes xx

I've had spotting in every pregnancy between 4 and 7 weeks.
I've had a scan with 2 and both times, they've said it's leftover blood from implantation.

It's normal.
It's actually listed as a symptom for 6 weeks pregnant.

I bled throughout the first trimester with both my pregnancies (those pregnancies are now 4 and 2)

I had a subchoronic haematoma both times which was the cause of the bleed. I also have a sensitive cervix.

Cancel the private scan, phone your GP when you're closer to 6 weeks and you can go to the hospital's early pregnancy unit and be scanned there. They don't see you before 6ish weeks as there isn't much to see before then.

I was scanned at the EPU at 6 and 9 weeks with both just to check on the SCH.

With baby 1 I was so scared and crying loads. We'd been trying for 2.5 years to get pregnant. With baby 2, I was expecting the bleeding so it wasn't as scary, though I did have 2 huge bleeds with her

I had this from 5+4 until around 7 weeks. Sometimes pale pink discharge, normally brown discharge and once brown and watery. My midwife told me not to worry, a doctor told me to get a scan, which I didn't because it stopped and was around Christmas, so I just rested up instead. All was fine at my dating scan and I heard the heartbeat today at 16+5 weeks. It's not always bad news, but I have had 2 early miscarriages that started the same way so I completely understand your worries. All the best for your scan xx
