Brown discharge and cramping - first trimester

nibblette · 26/02/2021 20:51

I'm currently 5-6 weeks pregnant and waiting till Monday for my registration at the new GP practice to be confirmed. Yesterday I noticed a small amount of thick brown discharge when wiping. I called 111 for a callback from the out of hrs doc. He said it may be remnants of old blood from implantation bleeding, and as long as I didn't experience severe cramps or heavier bleeding all should be well.

This morning I had some pink discharge, this evening more brown thick discharge and mild lower back pain and cramps. I've had lower back pain and cramps intermittently throughout my pregnancy so far, so am not sure if it's strictly related. The GP practice gave me the phone number for the midwife to call for a referral so I am going to call her on Monday and mention it.

I'm just feeling a bit anxious and upset until then as both me and my partner really want this baby. 😰

Cramps are normal as long as there's no red blood.

Also on the brown spotting, I've had brown and pink spotting with all 5 pregnancies of mine.
Had an early scan with 2 of them and both confirmed it was leftover blood from implantation bleeding.
Brown blood isn't so much a worry as it's old blood.
Spotting is a common symptom and actually listed as one around 6 weeks

Firstimehere · 26/02/2021 22:47

I had brown and pink discharge at 6 weeks, had an early scan at the EPU and everything was ok and saw heartbeat. I’m now week 11 and haven’t had anything since. Maybe call the EPU at the hospital to see if they can offer you a scan? Wishing you all the best with your pregnancy x

@SnooperTrooper12345
That's really reassuring to hear, thank-you. 🤗I had a miscarriage in my early twenties so I sometimes worry about history repeating itself, which I know isn't helpful. I'll keep reminding myself what you said about cramps being normal and it not being red blood. x

@Firstimehere
So glad you had the early scan and everything was fine. The doc did mention I could call the early pregnancy unit on Monday if I still had concerns. They're actually on the same road as where I live which is convenient. My Mum suggested I call them too if for anything some peace of mind. Wishing you all the best with your pregnancy too and sending hugs. 💜

I totally get your worry. My first 2 pregnancies were miscarriages hence why I had scans for the brown discharge because I was so worried!

Hello,

@nibblette I was just wondering how you went and if everything is ok? as I have very similar symptoms and am also 5-6 weeks. I'm so worried!

ALittleOCD · 05/04/2021 16:47

@melmel8 me too. I'm 6 weeks tomorrow and had pink spotting when I wipe. Since about Thursday I've had it but not enough to stain my pants and nothing properly red but still worried. Will call the doc tomorrow. Haven't been able to get through because of the Easter public holidays

melmel8 · 05/04/2021 21:00

@ALittleOCD I've had the same problem with the doctors being closed. I did manage to get to see someone on Saturday and he said it's probably nothing and very common and basically it's a waiting game. Worst waiting game ever! I have a blood test today, (had to wait with Easter everything was closed) to see if the hcg has gone down (fingers crossed it's still rising), but no point in getting a scan because it's too early anyway.

I hope you're ok, please let me know how you go when you do get in to see someone.

I've read in other posts that it could just be residue implantation bleeding.

ALittleOCD · 06/04/2021 11:09

@melmel8

I got hold of the doc this morning. She's not worried but I've gone for blood tests to check everything. Need to go again tomorrow.. Feeling really worried now. Noticing every twinge or niggle

melmel8 · 06/04/2021 23:33

@ALittleOCD
I'm exactly the same, very worried and focusing on every little pain. Has the bleeding stopped? I still have this brown discharge, today is day 5. It's not a lot but it's there.

The waiting is the worst part.

ALittleOCD · 07/04/2021 05:53

@melmel8 yesterday was day 6 of the discharge for me and it turned red last night. More blood this morning. Not looking good this end. I really pray yours stops today

weathervane123 · 07/04/2021 16:30

I'm in the same boat. I'm 6+3, positive OPK on 5th-6th March, but I have a feeling I implanted late due to 4 days of cramps around when my period was due. I came off the implant and only had one period before I conceived so I don't know exactly how long my cycle is. Before it was anything between 24-29 days, but more likely 29.

On 22nd March a Clearblue digital told me 1-2 weeks, but today I got 2-3 weeks, when I was really expecting 3+ weeks.

I had sore swollen boobs, some bloating/gas, and tiredness, but other than that I've had no other symptoms. Now my boobs are barely tender.

Today I had some discomfort (I wouldn't even call it a cramp) and some pink spotting, followed by a small but dark brown bit of discharge. I called the clinic where my first midwife appointment is happening (in exactly one week) to ask what I should do, and they told me to go to A&E. It seemed extreme but I went and now I have an EPU referral. They're going to call tomorrow, and if they don't agree to scan me I think I'm going to lose my mind.

I hope everyone is okay.

melmel8 · 07/04/2021 21:27

@ALittleOCD is it a lot of blood? I have friends who have had bright red blood and gone on to have successful pregnancies, don't give up!

melmel8 · 07/04/2021 21:28

@weathervane123

Good luck! I hope everything is ok. Maybe you're just a little earlier along than you thought you were.

Thank you. Good luck to you, too! There is a small chance I'm a bit earlier than I had thought, but it wouldn't be by much I don't think. I don't know how far to trust that OPK! My evil brown discharge has continued. Can't sleep, which is typical! I'm really hoping that I can get an appointment with the EPAU tomorrow when they call but I have this horrible feeling I'll be waiting a while, and if it's Friday it's the worst day for my partner to come with me as he has this big day at work :-(

@melmel8

Hello,

@nibblette I was just wondering how you went and if everything is ok? as I have very similar symptoms and am also 5-6 weeks. I'm so worried!

Hey melmel8 Smile

I ended up having a 6 week scan at the EPU and everything was fine, got to see a little healthy heartbeat. That time they said it was likely leftover blood from implantation.

I've had multiple bleeding episodes since, even passing a few small dark clots on two occasions and everything was still fine. I had another scan at the EPU yesterday (12 weeks) and baby was kicking and doing flips with a strong heartbeat. I'm on pelvic rest as my cervix seems especially prone to bruising and bleeding, but all is well with baby.

Each time I've been concerned the best thing I've found was to text/call my community midwife and book in an appointment at my local EPU for a scan. I only visited a GP once about it as I didn't find their "wait and see" approach very helpful. I found the EPU and midwife to be a lot more helpful and reassuring.

I hope you're doing okay, you are in my thoughts. xx

@melmel8 Unfortunately I miscarried yesterday.. turned to clotting and major blood. Blood tests came back with almost 0 progesterone .. Still positive HCG but not enough for 6 weeks. Very disappointed

I'm so sorry to hear this. I hope you feel better soon.

weathervane123 · 08/04/2021 09:52

Well, my brown discharge progressed to blood last night. It's bright red and reasonably heavy so I think I have to assume the worst. Have a scan booked at EPAU tomorrow morning but I don't even think I'll need it at this rate. Absolutely gutted.

melmel8 · 08/04/2021 10:03

@ALittleOCD I'm sorry to hear. I hope you're ok. I'm sure things will turn around for you and you will be pregnant again before you know it.

melmel8 · 08/04/2021 10:03

@nibblette

So happy to hear! Thanks so much for the update. It seems everyone's having such different experiences.
