Phenomenal hunger 1st trimester

So this is my second pregnancy. Last time I was really hungry and I ate a lot in the first trimester, which luckily also staved off the nausea a bit. The hunger last time matched the descriptions I see online: "need to eat every hour or two" type of hunger.
But this time the hunger is literally insatiable! I eat all day, almost continuously, but nothing whatsoever will stop it. A medium bowl of cereal does not stop the (audible) growling at all. A large bowl stops it for maybe 10-15 minutes then it's back. My stomach growls all night too.
I try to eat protein and fats when I can stomach them, but the nausea has a mind of its own and that isn't always possible. It doesn't seem to make a difference to the hunger monster anyway!
Keeping the hunger away is vital so I don't feel sick and can work, but it doesn't seem possible to keep it away! Has anyone had this next level hunger? What did you do?

Yes, I’m 8 weeks and have this too and had it even worse in my first pregnancy. To be honest I’m probably not the best one to be giving advice as I just really go for it and eat everything in sight. So far today I’ve had two crumpets, two packets of crisps, 3 cookies and a huge bowl of pasta and Im currently contemplating my next move. Blush

In my first pregnancy I found that sucking on mints helped a bit, as well as drinking lots of dizzy water. Sometimes you just need carbs though!

Spillanelle · 25/02/2021 15:45

fizzy water not dizzy water!

Mamabearwhere · 25/02/2021 15:55

Yes me! 10 weeks today and since week 5/6 I have a next level of hunger. Unfortunately I also have horrendous nausea and sickness so trying to keep my stomach full when I hate the sight of everything is difficult. I have to have 2 weetabix when I wake up with a banana, a piece of toast an hour later and I’m still absolutely starving. The worst part is I feel sick but when I puke nothing comes back up as if it’s all been digested already. It’s as if anything I put in my stomach just disappears instantly. Counting down till second trimester when hopefully it calms down a bit

Yes the hunger/neusea was unbelievable for a few weeks.. It only lasted a few weeks and honestly I think there was nothing to do but eat whatever you fancy whenever you fancy it. It will pass!

HerringGull · 25/02/2021 17:33

Thanks for the tips, will definitely try the fizzy water and mints, you never know!
Eating everything seems to be the only way to go, but worried about weight gain. Last time I put on four pounds in the first trimester and that was only standard level ravenousness!

11 weeks tomorrow and feel hungry all the time. I have two pieces of toast and a pear for breakfast, a snack in the morning, a snack while i make lunch of pasta or 4 sandwiches, a snack in the afternoon and another while I wait for dinner (and have a pudding later). I am hungry in between but can’t just sit and eat all day! I used to be very healthy meal wise and that’s gone out the window.

I found drinking coke can help curb the hunger but you can’t have too many due to the caffeine - but I was surprised to find it had a lower level than expected.

Are you wfh at the moment? If I was going to the office I would have to take a bag for life full of snacks or id panic!! I honestly don’t see how this could stop? It’s like having a tapeworm.

Keyboard91 · 25/02/2021 18:15

In my first pregnancy (DS) I had the ‘need to eat or I’ll feel horrific’ feeling. With this one I was STARVING throughout much of the 1st trimester. That plus showing early led me to convince myself it was twins! But it’s not, phew (big respect for mums of multiples). Based on nub theory this may be a DD so wondering if that’s what caused such a different response to pregnancy!

HerringGull · 25/02/2021 18:22

@Chica1990 bag for life 🤣 that's just what I feel like but can't physically eat that much because I feel sick if I eat a lot. Can't win!
@Keyboard91 my first was a girl and that was only 'ordinary-super-hunger'. Based on your theory my current hunger levels suggest I've got six girls cooking in there!

imalmostthere · 25/02/2021 18:35

Tangfastics - I literally used to go through a bag a day. That and Ice lollies and jelly! I figured they're basically juice so it can't be that bad 😂

Mamabearwhere · 25/02/2021 19:30

@Chica1990 haha at bag for life! I honestly do know how you feel. It’s a constant battle of can’t eat but “omg must eat it I’ll pass out”. @Keyboard91 Hm interesting theory, with me I was normal pregnancy hungry with both DDs, normal nausea and sickness but this one is crazy hunger and relentless 24/7 nausea and sickness so I was thinking maybe I’m having a boy because the symptoms are so different. I also haven’t had any cravings yet whereas with the girls I was already have strong cravings in first trimester

HerringGull · 25/02/2021 19:31

Hahaha DH came home with two bags of Tangfastics today!! Will try jelly, good idea x

Cafeaulait27 · 25/02/2021 19:47

Yes!!! I’m 7 weeks and my stomach is growling constantly. I find that nuts, peanut butter, cheese etc are really good for it. I try to stay away from sugar xx

AllTheCakes · 25/02/2021 20:05

Same here! 7 weeks and completely insatiable. It’s horrible not feeling full after a meal but I think you have to just run with it. I do feel guilty seeing the advice of not eating any extra until the last trimester, and even then it’s only 200 extra calories per day. I can’t help feeling if you are hungry your body really needs the extra energy.

Tots0611 · 25/02/2021 21:29

I just read this thread and had to go get a bowl of cereal 😂. I eat with the kids about 1630 and then need a little top up to see me through the night. Some days are worse than others! With my first I used to wake up at 4am and had to keep snacks in my bedside drawer Blush

2021WillBeGreat · 26/02/2021 08:44

This is me all the time. I'm also going from not hungry to stomach growling and feeling faint in a matter of minutes! I literally only want carbs 24/7.
