How much can they tell at 17 week scan?

Hello,

I had a second trimester loss due to tfmr last year as my baby had edwards syndrome. It was picked up on harmony test first.

As I am 17.5 weeks pregnant again now I have so far had ok scans (most recent was last week at 16 weeks) but still very nervous. My harmony came back clear too. I have a scan at 17.5 weeks tomo then anomaly scan at 22 weeks. Wondering if anyone knows if at 17 weeks you'd pick up on any major issues or would there still be things they can't check at this stage? I hate the idea of feeling like this until 22 weeks.

Thank you, x

Anomaly scans are done from 18 weeks. With you not being far off that baby will be quite well developed, if there are no signs of problems then it's a low chance of any showing on the next. Good luck

Thank you @Chelyanne for the reply. We haven't told anyone yet so was wondering as well as I'm starting to show and might not make it to 22 weeks without being obviously pregnant. But don't want to tell family without some reassurance.

Hopefully all will go OK xx

I'm so sorry for what you've been through. My situation isn't the same as yours but I'm currently pregnant after a loss and I can relate to the heightened anxiety and worry.

I had a scan at 16 weeks and although it wasn't an anomaly scan they did a fairly thorough check of the brain, limbs, spine etc and said everything looked like it was developing as it should. It's my understanding that most of the major issues they look for in the anomaly scan would be noticeable at this stage. I know it's impossible not to worry but the chances are that if the Harmony test and scans so far have been okay that everything is fine.

I had fortnightly scans with my last baby (it was following a neonatal loss) and had several scans that were classed as anomaly ones, which began from 15 weeks. All my scans were with the head of fetal medicine at my hospital who was very thorough.

I hope all goes well.

I had an anomaly scan at 16 weeks and they were very very thorough. Took an hour. I had it private thought at the Fetal medicine centre so not sure if available on NHS. This was also done by a senior doctor. Very sorry for your previous loss and hope all goes well this time.

I'm sorry to hear what you've gone through OP, congratulations on your current pregnancy.

I'm very similar - had a tfmr for T18 at 16w in august and now (thankfully) pregnant again and absolutely petrified.
I had a scan at 16w with FMU and it was quite detailed (brain, heart, spine, limbs) and everything was normal. I think as pp have said that you would start to see some signs of abnormalities at this stage.

Sounds like things are as they should be for you. Good luck with your scan today, hope it gives you reassurance x
