Scan at 6+1, no heartbeat, measuring 5 and a half weeks

So I've had spotting throughout this pregnancy and had a scan at the EPU today. I had a MMC last year and had hoped I'd get some reassurance today but not so far.

I'm 6+1 today. I don't know when I ovulated so it's based on LMP. The scan showed a gestational sac, yolk sac, embryo measuring 2.3mm but no heartbeat. They also said I was measuring about five and a half weeks pregnant. They also identified an area of haemorrhage next to the sac where the bleeding is coming from, which is apparently common.

I know it's early days and no one is psychic but does anyone have any stories of hope in similar circumstances. I don't know why I'm only measuring five a half weeks. The EPU won't re-scan because of Covid, unless there's pain or lots of bleeding, so I've booked a private scan for next Sunday - a week on - to see what's going on and if there are positive signs.

The sonographer seemed fairly upbeat and said it looked good but could just be too early for a heartbeat but the doctor I then saw seemed somewhat more pessimistic and said she thought there would have been a heartbeat at 6+1.

If anyone has any positive stories - or any information - I'd be very grateful whilst I bite my fingernails waiting for next week's scan.

Usually at 6+1 there would be a heartbeat but if you're only measuring 5 and a half, this is when it starts to appear.
It's normally to be a few days behind or ahead based on your LMP.

I went for a scan with my first at what I thought was 6+2. I was measuring 5+3 and no heartbeat was seen. They called me back a week later and rescanned and a heartbeat was seen 😊

Unfortunately it ended in miscarriage at 10 weeks but that wasn't linked to not seeing the heartbeat at the first scan

Thank you @SnooperTrooper12345. Guess I'll find out one way or another at next week's scan. Just feels like a lifetime to wait....

Just a bump to see if others have been in a similar position....

At 6+1 you should see a heartbeat but you don't know when you ovulated so you don't actually know how far along you are. A scan says you are 5 and a half weeks and they've seen nothing to worry about for a pregnancy of that gestation.

I've been where you are and had it go both ways so I do know how worrying it all is but all you can do is hope that like millions of women, you simply ovulate later than the textbook average of 14 days.

All the best for the next scan. I'll keep everything crossed for you.

The problem is I have a 24/25 day cycle, and got a positive pregnancy test on the 29th, so I can't see how I could have ovulated late. If I use the pregnancy gestation calculators that allow cycle length to be inputted, it would make me 6+5 at yesterday's scan.

The wait until next Sunday is like torture.

Just to update - had scan this evening. Now measuring 10 days behind. There was a heartbeat but slow. So things not looking good. Absolutely gutted - had a MMC last year and looks like another miscarriage on the cards.

Updating this purely in case someone searches, comes across this and then doesn't know the outcome (which I've been doing for weeks and found it so frustrating when people haven't updated threads).

So, the pregnancy has ended in miscarriage at 8 weeks. The slow growth, lack of heartbeat when sure of dates and spotting throughout (plus a clearblue not going above 2-3 weeks) were all indicative that this pregnancy never really got off the ground. I started bleeding at the weekend and still bleeding heavily now. All pregnancy symptoms have gone. I have a scan on Monday to see if everything has passed and if not then I have a D&C booked on Wednesday.

@DappledOliveGroves I'm so sorry for your loss! I had a MMC in January and I can really sympathise with your pain ❤️ I hope (however horrible a hope it is!) that you manage to pass it naturally without too much pain and that you don't need the D&C ❤️ will be thinking of you!
