Low dose aspirin/spotting?

Hello,
This is my third pregnancy and I’m 16 weeks. The midwife at booking appointment advised me to take low dose (150mg) aspirin daily from 12 weeks due to me having high blood pressure at the end of my first pregnancy. I took 75mg daily in my second pregnancy after being advised to by a gp.
I never had any issues with it last time. But in current pregnancy, I had a bit of red spotting at 14 weeks (only lasted a day or so) but it started about a week after starting the aspirin. I just thought it was coincidental but when I was checked at early pregnancy they said (thankfully!) that baby was fine and nothing bleeding around the baby, but they suggested the aspirin might have caused it.
Has anyone else ever had this?
I stopped taking it for about a week because it scared me but in past few days I’ve started it again, and now I’m on edge incase I get any more of the spotting.
I’ve got a midwife appointment tomorrow so will discuss it but just wondered if this happened to anyone else?
Thanks x

Hi,

I’m taking 150mg daily due to a family history of pre-eclampsia. I had a massive bleed at 13 weeks and then bled for 3 weeks after that. I was worried the aspirin could have caused it but my midwife, GP and doctor I saw at the hospital told me it wouldn’t have been anything to do with the aspirin. They were encouraging me to take it as it makes the blood “less sticky” when passing the placenta.

Hope that helps, I know how worrying it is! X

I was taking aspirin due to family history of preeclampsia and being my first pregnancy. It caused terrible nose bleeds twice a week - upto an hour and half at a time. I was advised to come off it with them being so long and touch wood the nose bleeds have stopped. Hopefully your midwife can advise on what’s best for you OP x

Hi
Thank you both for your replies.
@RoseA89
I’m sorry about your bleed, that must have been really scary. I too felt that it might just be coincidence as I didn’t have any issues last time but then wondered because of it being double the dose now. It’s very reassuring that several health professionals felt that aspirin wouldn’t cause it. I had no high blood pressure at the end of my second pregnancy when I was taking it so I like to think it helped although of course there’s no way to know if the aspirin was a factor!
I’d feel happier taking it but just worried about any bleeding again.
@Sparksflyxo goodness those nose bleeds sound horrible. Glad they seem to have settled down now. Will mention it to midwife tomorrow but I’m pretty sure she will advise to keep taking it.
X

I’m taking aspirin and I’m currently 6 weeks. It’s very early days for me but I haven’t had any bleeding as yet and hope not to. The aspirin won’t harm your baby and it shouldn’t cause the bleeding, it does thin your blood but doesn’t cause you to bleed.

The bleeding most likely was caused by something else but if it’s stopped now that’s good xx

Aww congratulations! So lovely to hear.

Can I just ask, did you continue with the aspirin then?

BerylSilverstone · 28/07/2021 12:43

@Applecrumble24
Yes I continued with the aspirin right up til he was born and thank you! X
