Lots of floaters in eyes? 21 weeks

Recently and more so today I've had lots of grey floaters when my eyes are open (especially looking at a screen) I sometimes had this before pregnancy which I went to the opticians for last year and said everything was fine. I had this last pregnancy 2 years ago and my midwife wasn't concerned
Is it anything to worry about? Feel abit sick aswell on and off the last few days, I'm 21 weeks

Forgot to add that my eyes have felt sore and dry the last few days (had this in the past too)

Can’t this be a sign of preeclampsia?

I’d call your midwife or GP to be on the safe side.

If you had it pre pregnancy then it could be absolutely nothing, but I’d feel happier being checked.

I would go get your blood pressure checked, visual disturbances are a red flag during pregnancy.

TaraR2020 · 15/02/2021 14:17

I would get it checked, either by gp or optician, as an urgent appointment. Probably nothing to worry about but sudden changes in vision should always be checked urgently just in case.

i just had this last week! quite relieved i'm not the only one. i'm almost 22 weeks now and called triage when it happened because i was worried about preeclampsia, but they didn't seem too concerned as my recent BP and urine measurements were all fine, and i didn't have a headache or any other symptoms. They did advise i go get my eyes checked so i went for a scan at the opticians and it all looked fine, and it's since gone back to normal. the opticians said vision can change during pregnancy, and advised i eat more oily fish. i just put it down to being one of those pregnancy things (not very scientific i know..!) - but if it comes back/gets worse later in pregnancy i'll make sure to get it checked out again.

Thank you all! I do remember having it on and off the last pregnancy. I haven't had any urine or blood pressure checks since 8 weeks so I got an appointment now to go get checked, hopefully all fine and just hormone related

We've seen lots more cases of this than normal at my hospital and aren't really sure why. It's very unlikely to be a problem if it isn't accompanied by protein in your urine or high blood pressure.

I'd highly recommend buying yourself some urine test strips and a blood pressure monitor, so you can keep an eye on it at home. Both are very easy to use and checking twice a week will let you quickly see if a problem is brewing. Make sure this is just to supplement your scheduled appointments and still call AAU with any concerns.

I've had this as well a few times but hadn't thought anything of it (although I can now see it's one of the "call immediately if" things on the info they gave me)! I also have protein in my urine at every appointment - but that has been linked to an ongoing UTI that doesn't seem to have shifted (had it at booking appt, now 33 weeks and still showing up) so assumed they weren't linked. I always forget to mention the floaters at my MW appointment and preeclampsia hadn't even occurred to me... I assume if it was that the vision problem would still be there. Haven't had it for a couple of weeks now.

I do have a blood pressure monitor at home and my BP has always been normal at home and at appointments - I don't think you can have preeclampsia without high blood pressure? I've also had a growth scan and baby was measuring 50th percentile so assume no IUGR. You've made me think I should definitely mention at next appt though!

Just to update, I was seen earlier and had blood test, blood pressure & urine test and all came back clear, the doctor said it just seems to be a phenomenon in pregnancy (I do have anxiety aswell which can cause them apparently) and as someone said above maybe if there's been an increase in people having this it could be caused by stress/lockdown etc?
But yes I noticed the symptoms on the front of my pregnancy folder and panicked, I think definitely worth getting it checked x

Really glad you were seen so quickly and that everythings fine :) thank you for updating us!

northerngal20 · 16/02/2021 09:42

Glad to hear everything is okay!! Also that's really interesting that it's maybe caused by stress/lockdown, I guess it also coincides with more screen time!
