Retained product or new pregnancy?

Hi all,

I unfortunately had a miscarriage last month and was given tablets to pass the fetus. I bled for about 5 days and passed lots of clots, stopped for a week and then bled again for another 5 days.

All my pregnancy symptoms went away but the last couple of days I have had the same symptoms as before and did a clearblue test and it came up as 'pregnant 1-2 weeks'.

I had an appointment at the hospital yesterday and they scanned me and said I had a tiny amount of retained product left so have booked me in for a MVA (manual vacuum aspiration) on Monday.

My only concern is that it could be a new pregnancy that is too early to see on a scan rather than retained product. Has anyone else had any experience with this? The hospital haven't done any blood tests or anything so just a bit worried to go ahead with the procedure if it could potentially be a new pregnancy!

Sorry to hear about your miscarriage. I had exactly the same thing happen last summer and I was desperate that they were wrong and that it was in fact a new pregnancy. I brought this up when I went in for the MVA but they explained that, of course while it's something they thoroughly check, it is very obvious when it retained product vs a new pregnancy. They were able to remove everything the second time around and I fell pregnant shortly after. I hope everything turns out ok for you.

Did u have a negative test after the bleeds ? Maybe ring and talk to one of the doctors so they can go though it all in more detail, like what they are looking at on the scan and why they are not doing bloods ect so u can make a fully informed decision before going ahead x

I think they are right that it is retained products. Go for the procedure.

I had a mc at 9wk in July. It took 3 weeks for pregnancy tests to come back negative after that pregnancy. It's weird to take tests hoping for a negative when all you want is to still be pregnant.

@lydiaO101 sorry to hear of your MC. I had one a few weeks ago at 11 weeks. It's horrible. 2 weeks later I did a pregnancy and ovulation test and they said positive. Your hormones may have not settled and gone back to normal as mines. It may just be from the previous pregnancy unfortunately. Have you dtd since and has your period returned yet??

@kensue19 sorey to hear of your mc and congrats on your pregnancy. How far along are youSmile
When you mc how long did it take for your period to come back. I tested now at 2 weeks and the pregnancy and ovulation teat still say negative?
Also did you wait for your period to come back before ttc?
Was ur mc natural. My body passed everything out but if I still havent seen my period in the next 2 weeks I will go gp.

@kensue19 thank you, that makes me feel a lot better!
How did you find the MVA, I'm so nervous for it, especially because I'm going to be awake for it all!

@Lizbb we have dtd once since but then I bled again a few days after. Haven't actually had a negative pregnancy test since so I'm guessing its just retained product rather than new pregnancySad

I've had two MVAs under local anaesthetic and, whilst it's definitely not a nice experience to go through, there's no pain and it's over very quickly. There's also a sense of relief afterwards knowing that your body can start to get back to normal and you can make a fresh start. Im sorry you have to go through this too but us women are very strong, you will be ok.
