Umbilical Hernia 10 Weeks Preggo!!

So yeah, found a small bulge in belly button. Visited the Doc and he diagnosed an umbilical hernia. He said it shouldn’t cause any problems during my pregnancy and said it’s small, measuring around 1cm or less.

Has anyone experienced this before in pregnancy? What was your experience? Just sucks as it feels uncomfortable and my stomach hasn’t seen any considerable growth so I’m concerned when I’m further along the hernia will become problematic.

Just my luck aye!

Hi Op, I'm kind of in the same boat as you but mine is bigger (approx 4cm) The GP wasn't concerned about it at all but I've asked the midwive for a consultant referral. She said the appointment should come through soon so although I can't help now, I'll report back when I have seen them!

@Teakind hey, thank you for responding. Sorry to hear you’re too having to deal with this. I can’t wait to hear back from you following your appointment. I’m going to discuss this with my midwife too and see what her views are on this.

I had exactly the same, it caused me no problems during my pregnancy. I was given a list of things to look out for and was referred to a consultant.

I think it maybe poked out very slightly more when my bump was at its biggest.

I had it operated on when my baby was about 6 months old.

Hope that helps!

Also to add the consultant did absolutely nothing as I was pregnant. My appointment was less than two minutes and all they said was come back when you're not pregnant!

Teakind · 09/02/2021 19:39

Hi @purplecup can I ask how big yours was please? Glad it didn't cause you any issues.

@Teakind

Hi *@purplecup* can I ask how big yours was please? Glad it didn't cause you any issues.
I'm not sure exactly, it was quite noticeable. It was nearly 10 years ago so I have forgotten.

Neither my doctor or midwife were remotely worried.

I had a toddler at the time so just made sure I took it easy and limited all lifting.
Be aware of what you need to look out for in terms of a strangulated hernia but otherwise enjoy your pregnancy as best you can 😊

Hi @PurpleRayne89, I am 9+5 and have been told that I probably have one too. I have an uncomfortable lump above my belly button. The nurse and midwife weren't concerned. I've been referred to a consultant about other things and will ask about it then but so far I've been told not to be concerned & to just monitor it.

Hi, I had this in my first pregnancy and again in my second. Caused no problems at all. It was noticeable but most people thought it was my tummy button popping. Had surgery for it after my second pregnancy. Try not to worry should be any problem.

PurpleRayne89 · 09/02/2021 20:17

@purplecup thanks, very helpful and reassuring. I have health anxiety so I make things much bigger in my head.

@AdventuresAwait and @january29 thank you both. Definitely reassuring. It’s just so uncomfortable and not pleasant to look at.

I found I was self conscious about it, but over bump jeans sort of held it in a bit. And I was a bit tender towards the end when the bump is heavy. But otherwise it was a problem and now it’s repaired you’d never know. Congratulations on your pregnancy.

PurpleRayne89 · 09/02/2021 20:41

@january29 I’m glad it worked out for you. So after your pregnancy, it repaired itself? That’s really good.

Thank you x

No it didn’t repair itself but was less noticeable. I had surgery on it when my ds was 12 months as I knew I’d finished having children after that pregnancy. Could have had sooner but I choose to wait till then because it recovery.

Sorry I can’t type tonight!

PurpleRayne89 · 10/02/2021 13:33

@january29 I get you. Glad you got yours sorted.
