Pain at 5 weeks - scan shows sac but no embryo...

Hey ladies, looking for some words of encouragement.

I had a MC at 13 weeks last November. Now pregnant again. I’ve been having pain in my lower abdomen, right side only, for a few days, so went into EPU for some tests and a scan - by dates 5w exactly.

Scan showed a gestational sac in uterus, so ruled out ectopic, but no embryo yet. No cysts, ovaries look good. A small bleed next to the sac: Tests show no sign of infection and HCG is 4,659. I’m going back tomorrow for more bloods to confirm a rise.

Has anyone had a scan at 5w showing only a sac and gone on to have a successful pregnancy?

Sonographer seemed happy but consultant is concerned about locating the source of the pain.

I am obviously out of my mind with worry.

Thank you thank you x

I can't offer you any success stories but I'm in exactly the same position, except I'm at 6 weeks which makes an empty sac worrying. I'm surprised they scanned you tbh as most places wont do it before 6 weeks as they will expect to see nothing expect sac as it is too early.

I was told I've got to wait 2 weeks for another scan and I just really hope I'm earlier than I thought 🤞.

I was told they would not expect to see anything beyond a gestational sac before 6 weeks so between that and your high hcg levels it sounds like it is just too early to see anything more on a scan.

I wasnt even offered blood tests so feel very upset about it all as feels like they've presumed the worst for me but it is so hard when it's so early.

I know how you feel though, it's really tough.

Sending hugs x

Hey, I'm in a similar boat. I went to EPU last week with a bit of bleeding at what I thought was 7 weeks only to be told I'm measuring more like 5 (sac and yolk sac present but that's it). I'm in an awful state as I've had 6 previous MC's (the last 2 were MMc's and required D&C) and am not feeling too confident about my follow up scan next Thursday as this is pretty much how one of my MMC's played out. I'm also 40 and don't feel like I'm in the greatest place age wise either! Not helpful I know but wanted to offer a bit of solidarity

Thank you both for your replies - it's a terribly nerve wracking process. I wish I was back in my first pregnancy when I didn't know as much as I do now about what it all means and all the things that could go wrong.

@LunaDreams They only scanned me to rule out ectopic because I have one sided pain. They wouldn't have otherwise, so please don't be disheartened by my experience. x

I had a scan at 5+2 due to previous ectopic, they saw the gestational sac and the very start of a yolk sac but only when they moved the probe into a certain position. I had my 12 week scan on Thursday and baby has progressed beautifully ☺️ Think 5 weeks is just too early to see anything. Good luck!!

Hey,
I really wouldn’t worry about seeing only a sac at 5 weeks. A few days makes all the difference. I had a scan at 5+4 and saw the heartbeat but a few days earlier and it’s likely I wouldn’t have seen much at all!

Also I had slight left sided pain, the sonographer confirmed I had ovulated from my left and that the corpus luteum was on that left side in the ovary that I’d ovulated from and that that can cause a little pain sometimes.

It could be that that is the pain you’ve felt on your right side.

Good luck, your hcg levels seem good so 🤞🏻
