Third baby - labour stories

Hi, I’m pregnant with my third baby and starting to thinking about labour. My first was incredibly long and my second was a quick induction. I’m hoping to avoid induction this time so wondering what to expect.

I’ve seen some people say their third labour was shorter and also that the baby was a few days early. I’ve also heard that a third labour can be unpredictable. I’d love to hear anyone’s stories if they want to share.

Thanks in advance

My 3rd labor was pretty easy. Contractions started on my due date, were mild to start with but by the night of 40+1 were getting closer and more intense. Went to hospital 40+2 and was 5cm, was there over 5 hours with contractions getting stronger, they broke my waters and she arrived 11 minutes later with just a few pushes. Did tear as she came quicker than expected, midwife was out of the room on the 1st push.
Our 1st was a full induction that took 4 days, 7.5hrs after waters broken. 2nd was slow labor for 6 days, 2hr 19 after waters broken. Elective cesarean with our twins at 38wks, breech.

Hi @Teakind

Sorry to not have a story as much but I'm following as I'm 38+6 with third baby.

Hoping for a shorter labour (1st was 26 hours, 2nd was 10 hours). How are you feeling about it all this time around? When are you due?

BurningBenches · 02/02/2021 10:39

My 3rd was a very quick induction at 42wks. Waters popped and she was born 2hrs later. Very positive birth.

My 1st was a shit induction at 42wks. (Only 12 or 13 active hours but instrumental, back to back etc)
My second was my only spontaneous at 40+9 And 6hrs of active labour.
My 4th was also induced but at 40wks due to size and took longer than my 3rd at 4hrs active labour but took drip to get him going as my babies or my body aren't ready at 40wks (despite their size 😬😬)

One word - FAST!!

LemonBreeland · 02/02/2021 10:53

In my experience, and that of friends, third is usually quick. Fourth can be the one that is slower sometimes.

My first labour was only 4 hours, my third was 45 minutes. Mine all came a bit early, but third was the earliest. 9 days.

Teakind · 02/02/2021 13:55

@Kittens97 I’m not due until May. You’ll have to come back and update when you’ve had your third! Your second seemed quite quick so I wonder what your third will be like.

Thanks all. It seems they can be quick. @LemonBreeland that is incredibly quick! Did you make it to the hospital?

@teakind I had a planned home birth as my nearest hospital is 30 minutes away in good traffic.

#1 8hr Labour and 6 days late
#2 3hr Labour and 6 days late
#3 2hr 45min Labour and 3 days late and the most easy and less painful Labour out of them all!
I am now 24+3 with baby #4 x

EekThreek · 02/02/2021 22:16

#1 took 3 days of slow but constant labour, started on due date
#2 contractions started with waters breaking, baby born 4 hours later, on due date by lmp but 40+5 by scan
#3 waters went, 40+5 again, but had meconium. Contractions didn't get effective, so ended up being induced, was born 12 hours after waters breaking, 4 or 6 hours after induction (can't remember exactly, was off my face on pethidine for a good chunk of it!)

They were all quite different, but overall similarities (born naturally, no other interventions). Good luck!

My third I woke with interactions, was in full blown labour, paramedics were called as was the midwife.

paramedics arrived about 10 minutes before baby (midwife arrived an hour after baby)

1hour 15 minutes in total from waking and having baby. Also, only pushed a few times and he was here.

jellybe · 03/02/2021 00:08

Contractions not interactions🤦‍♀️

Notashandyta · 03/02/2021 00:53

Baby 1 and 2- a week early both times, and both times 24 hour labour

Baby 3- a week overdue, surprise home birth. Woke up at 2am, baby here at 5am. Paramedics and midwives for here in time. Super easy and wonderful, best labour by far

DramaAlpaca · 03/02/2021 01:58

DC1 a spontaneous 21 hour labour, five days early
DC2 spontaneous 12 hour labour, five days late
DC2 planned home birth, spontaneous labour five days early, very easy straightforward delivery and only took five hours which isn't quick for some women, but was for me!

canihaveacoffeeplease · 03/02/2021 03:04

DC1 born at 39+6 the day after the chimney and end wall of our house fell down (!). Fairly sure stress brought it on as I'd had no signs a lot labour at all. Had a homebirth before moving out the next day for 9 months

DC2 went into labour at 40+10, born 40+11. Again absolutely no signs of labour. In desperation to avoid induction and have my homebirth I took castor oil and was in labour 5 hours later. Pretty standard labour and a brilliant homebirth. Probably my favourite birth to be honest.

DC3 (6 months old now) had been having intense Braxton Hicks for WEEKS. Had antenatal appointment at 37+1, all good. At 37 weeks it meant I could go to my planned small rural hospital, not the big city hospital, so was happy to reach that milestone! At 37+3 sent DH to the pub for a couple of pints with a friend. Was doing a wee when he came back and felt my waters pop on the toilet. That was a great conversation ha ha, he thought I was joking. Called hospital, they said if I was happy to wait until something started to do that, or to call back at 8 am if nothing happened. We ran around frantically packing hospital bag as I hadn't done it, and warned our friends who were looking after the other 2. Had some minor contractions overnight. Called hospital in the morning, went in for checks and monitoring. Talked about next steps-antibiotics/drip. They made me lie down on the monitor and as soon as I did contractions went away so I was on the monitor for 2 bloody hours, no contractions. Eventually let me go, we walked around the local wetland centre for HOURS, contractions not regular at all but some pretty intense.DH kept saying things like 'shall we go get a coffee?' Ha ha. Not bloody likely! Went back to the hospital at 5pm for 1st batch of antibiontics as waters had been gone 16 hours. Shift has changed and I had FANTASTIC midwives who used the wireless monitor so I just bounced on the ball for half an hour while they did it. Plan was then to go home for 4 hours and try to get some rest, but the dr came in to see me and recommended we stay as he reckoned contractions were pretty intense, couldn't talk through them etc and I'd end up having baby in the car. So they took me to my room, gave me something to help me sleep. DH went outside to call the dcs and say goodnight, suddenly it all got very very intense very quickly, majorly painful contractions, and I got really cold and shivery. Midwives heard me from the nurses station and took me back to the delivery room, got DH, wrapped me up in warm blankets (amazing!). I asked for gas and air, they ran the bath, helped me off with my clothes as it was mega intense. She arrived 15 minutes later, in the water, never got the 2nd lot of antibiotics. Dr came back after the birth and was all smug as yes, I would've ended up giving birth in the car! It was intense and crazy, and unlike previous labours no gradual buildup so I didn't expect it was coming so quickly.

Good luck!

Woke up at 6am, went to the loo and waters broke. Mild contractions started so we organised the other DC, got to the hospital around 9, was 3cm, spent a couple of hours in the TV room whilst I got up and walked around with contractions. Decided on a boys name because everyone had been totally convinced it was a girl and I suddenly had a feeling it was a boy. Moved to our room when the contractions got overwhelming, was 6cm and had some pethidine. Slept/dozed between contractions until the last half hour when I used gas and air, baby boy born at 1.35. The pushing stage was a lot harder but that was because he was 8lbs 6 with a big head. First two DC were 7lbs 10 and 7lbs 2.
