So at 16 weeks we went private and we was told girl. And yesterday after i had to go back to finish up my 20 week scan she said she's almost certain we are having a boy. I'm just so confused and don't know what to believe.

I have pictures from 20week rescan and it deffo looks like a penis. Is there a way to upload an image for more opinions.

Thank you!!! :)

I’d believe your 20 week scan

Definitely believe your NHS 20 week.

Yeah boys can hide their bits. We were told ds2 was a girl at our 20w scan and he is most definitely a boy (he is 1yo now)!

Always wonder what happens if people have a massive gender reveal party and then have to tell people it was wrong. Don’t they always say these scans aren’t 100%

Santaiscovidfree · 01/02/2021 18:25

3 NHS scans told me a girl. A very well endowed ds arrived at 40 weeks!!

16 weeks is very early - the earliest that they will try and see. Therefore it's quite easy to get it wrong as everything is teeny tiny and not always visible.
I'd trust your 20 week scan. It's highly likely that the penis was just too small to see at 16 weeks and now is very obvious.
Could you contact the private scan place? They might offer a free rescan if they got it wrong the first time.

ineedaholidaynow · 01/02/2021 18:30

Why would you need another scan?

nicciw87 · 01/02/2021 19:40

Contact the company you had the private scan at and explain to them they may offer you a free rescan

Crazycatlady83 · 01/02/2021 19:57

Go back to the private clinic and see what they say. But I would definitely tend to believe the NHS scan given 16 weeks is still really early. Congratulations on your pregnancy!

I don't get the problem. The more recent scan is likely to be right as it's easier to see as the baby grows. What is there to be confused over?

This is why it's not always helpful to ask about the sex.....

lockedownloretta · 01/02/2021 21:27

why don't you wait until the baby is born and then it will be very obvious?

This happened to a distant cousin. Quite humorous after she had demanded lists of expensive pink items!

Are you on PC or a mobile device? If PC there are "choose file" buttons near where you type a response, you hit one of those, navigate to the file on your computer and add it....if you're on mobile I don't know, I usually post from the PC, but I expect there will be something similar.

Personally, I would trust the 20 week scan over the 16 week one, NHS sonographers are very highly trained, whereas I have heard that some places that do elective scans to see the sex have sonographers with basic training to do just that. I have had a 16 week sexing scan with my third son and there was NO mistaking his bits, he was all "Look at my balls!" I gather though, that the "slice" of image the sonographer has to get to be sure of the sex is very specific, and if that slice isn't visualised, mistakes can be made. The place I went to was Babybond and it's part of ultrasound direct, they do a lot of private medical scans so the sono was absolutely very well trained.

Congrats either way! Babies are awesome! Grin

Well (shrugs) it's one or the other.

StillWeRise · 01/02/2021 22:24

it doesn't matter

This is why I’m waiting until the birth. Flowers
