Finding out the gender - how do they tell you?

I’m pregnant with my third baby and have never found out the gender at a scan before. We are considering doing so this time and I’m just curious as to how it happens? Do they point it out to you for you to make your own conclusion, or just announce it, or say “it looks like” without committing?! I’m intrigued!

Mine said something like 'it looks like you're having a girl' then explained what she was looking at that made her think that (I.e. No penis to be found Grin).

Yup what @ProfInkly said!

At my 20 week scan I was asked if I wanted to know and we said yes. The sonograher then asked what we thought we were having and I said boy, my husband said he didn't know. She then carried out all the necessary checks and just before she finished she was all "you should always follow what the mother thinks" and then said "little girls don't have one of those" 🤣🤣

Our sonographer asked at the start if we wanted to know and we said yes. As she was going through the checks she got to that area and just went ‘so it looks like you’re having a boy’! We were obviously delighted but looked at each other like ‘woah’ 😂
She then looked again and said that they can’t be 100% sure but she had little doubts with ours because it was so prominent!

It depends on the trust, some don't reveal gender.
Ones we've been to usually ask before they show us around on the scan, they avoid that area if you don't want to know. We had a private gender scan with our 2nd and they gave us pictures of between the legs.

The sonographer checked that we wanted to know and then showed us our DD’s ovaries. It was very very cool.

Our sonographer asked if we wanted to know, then explained what each sex looks like at 20 weeks. He then zoomed in and asked my husband what he could see. It was a really lovely way of doing it

At my 20 week scan before sonographer even started she asked did I want to know the gender. Then as shes going through the steps of checking baby once she gets down to that area she just said what she thought it was. We had had a gender scan before so i told the sonographer that I was already told it was a girl so if she could just confirm that would be great, which she did. Good Luck.

Mine said ‘do you want to know what you’re having? Well I can’t see a todger hiding anywhere so I think it’s a girl!’
Was on my own so think he was trying to cheer me up.

Sex not gender. Sorry, but every time I read this I get riled. It’s important, a scan cannot reveal a gender.

Congratulations on whatever sex your beautiful baby turns out to be. 👨‍👩‍👧👨‍👩‍👧

Thanks all for your replies, really helps as I was struggling to imagine it!
@Neenan you are right

I think gender is ‘felt ’ and sex ‘observed’ or some such.
