Gestational Diabetes and being induced

Hi Smile

I was recently diagnosed with Gestational diabetes. All my readings are well below (ranging between 4.6 and 6.5 being the highest) im still eating carbs as it seems my body can tolerate them..... at the moment.

Anyway, baby is measuring fine at my last scan at 26+6 so no particular concerns at present.

Due to being an IVF pregnancy and having a small baby on my previous, my consultant has said (before my diagnoses) that they would induce me on my due date.

Now that we are throwing GD in the mix, will they induce even earlier? Or will they only do that depending on blood sugar levels and size of the baby?

Thanks

If you are managing the condition and there are no problems with baby then they'll stick to the current plan. Things may change at short notice though so I'd have everything you need prepped ready to go at any time.

I have GD too and my consultant has informed me that I will be induced at 39 weeks just waiting for a confirmed date now. My sugar readings are like yours too, well below the levels.

Hi Op, congratulations on your pregnancy.

I think different trusts have different guidelines but it mostly seems to be as follows:
Diet controlled- induce at 40 weeks
Metformin- induce at 39 weeks
Insulin- induce at 37-38 weeks

I think the NICE guidelines say diet controlled mums can be left until 40+6 but I'm sure your consultant would make a decision based on your individual circumstances (for example the size of the baby)

I remained diet controlled with my DS and was induced at 40 weeks as he was measuring on the big side and they were worried he would get stuck. Luckily he didn't!

Ah i forgot to mention im on Metformin but i have been on this since before pregnancy due to recurrent miscarriage.

So there may be a chance of it being 39 weeks then (i doubt this though)
Will find out next week

The metformin is probably helping to keep your levels low.

Have you been on the Gestational Diabetes UK website and Facebook group? There’s loads of useful info on there.

I had GD with my son and I controlled it with diet. I had regular growth scans and was induced on my due date. Baby was born weighing 7lb 3oz and was completely unaffected by the GD. I really appreciated the extra monitoring and felt confident when they waited until my due date.

I was induced at 38+4 with DS (GD on Metformin)
I'm being induced at 38+3 on Sunday with DD (GD on Insulin and Metformin).

All depends on growth scans and you managing gd. I was booked in for a sweep at 39 weeks then pos induction the week after but they thought my waters had gone so induced me at 38 plus 5 baby born day after. Avoid induction if you can I wasn't on medication x

Induction is inevitable as they already want to induce on DD. I was induced with DS at 34 weeks and apart from him being prem, it was a really positive experience.

I know its a long shot, but im still hoping to be allowed to labour in the birthing centre. I cant see if my levels keep being as low as the are, despite still eating carbs, that it should be closed off and an absolute no. I appreciate if baby is measuring big or other concerns that this wouldn't be considered.

I have found the GDUK website and FB but i find the info very conflicting to what the NHS say.
