My first miscarriage, wondering what to expect. (handhold?)

Well I've just been given bad news today. I started bleeding bright red for about 2 hours yesterday at 7w2d and had a scan. The baby was 6w gestational age with an abnormal sac, no heartbeat. I haven't bled heavily yet and I'm scared because I was reviewing my notes and my doctor said I have a large subchorionic hemorrhage. I understand these can cause a lot of bleeding, to be honest I feel a bit silly as I don't know if the SCH was due to the miscarriage or existed before or how that even works. I'm also wondering if you wouldn't mind telling me what happened if you had a loss around this time. I'm upset about this whole thing and scared mostly about the amount of bleeding I'll have and if there will be a lot of pain? Thank you for any handholding or shared experiences xx

Op I'm so sorry to hear this and hope you're ok. I can't offer advice as when I MC it was as 16 weeks so would be different for you but just wanted to offer a hand hold and hope you're ok x

Justme10 · 26/01/2021 22:19

I had a miscarriage when I was 7 weeks and I bled about as much as I would if it was a period, if I hadn't tested 2 days before I probably would of thought it was my period. I have no idea about the SCH.

Apart from slight back ache I didn't have any other pain but that might be different for everyone.

I'm so sorry for your loss and you have my hand to hold Thanks

Condolences on your loss. Take care of yourself.

All my of my mc have been between 8 & 12 weeks. The most recent was in July at 9wk, baby had measured 7+4 on a scan a week earlier so a bit behind dates. My bleeding started out very light on Thursday night but got heavier over a couple of days, I had bad cramps and large clots Saturday evening. Heavy bleeding continued on Sunday and I passed baby in it's sac that afternoon. I had very bad cramps all week with heavy bleeding for a few days and the bleeding completely stopped in about a week. It took over 2 weeks for pregnancy tests to come back negative. My 1st mc several years ago led to an infection and I had to have antibiotics, if you experience heavy bleeding for more than 2 weeks this could be a cause. It's an awful thing to have to go through.

I'm sorry for your loss Flowers
I had a miscarriage at a similar gestation. It was like a heavy period. The hormonal changes were horrible too.

I don't know if it helps to know but prior to 12 weeks there's nothing you could have done to prevent the miscarriage; they're almost all (>99%) due to foetal/developmental abnormalities.

I've gone on to have 2 children and am expecting the 3rd in march. This is the only pregnancy I haven't had bleeding in.

Fingers crossed for you if you try again

My current one is like a very very heavy period, with more clots. It's surprisingly painful - again nothing severe but more intense than usual period pain. Previous was medically managed and then a chemical, so can't compare.

Sorry you have to go through this OP. It sucks.

Hi,
I am currently also going through a miscarriage for the first time, the unknown is the worst.
I would have been 7 weeks yesterday but started spotting 3 days before with period type cramps. Since then i have had what i would describe as a heavy period again with cramps but i was not prepared to see what i think was the sac, that has upset me more.
I am sorry for you and anyone who has to go through this. It's so hard but thank god for mumsnet!
Hope you have some support at home, i am so thankful for my toddler who is a happy distraction.

So sorry you're going through this - it's horrid. I had a MC at similar gestation. It started with brown blood that then turned red with small clots the next day. The bleeding slowed after about 4 days and I thought it was over and started trying to get on with things. While I was up a ladder cleaning the cooker hood of all things I passed a relatively large clot (about half the size of my palm) and started bleeding again which went on for another week - more like a normal period. Passing the clot felt weird but not any more painful than period cramps. Physically the whole thing wasn't that bad - like a heavy period. Emotionally it was hard to deal with. I had another MC at later gestation which was more painful but at 6wks hopefully there won't be too much pain.

Handhold for you lovely ladies going through this shit time, stay strong x

dippyegg32 · 28/01/2021 07:15

I had a mmc and a large subchorionic haematoma too. The consultant recommended surgical management as the risk of bleeding from the clot alone was huge never mind coupled with miscarriage loss.

Sorry for your loss OP. I’ve unfortunately had 7 miscarriages - 6 were natural. Pain wise only 1 was bad. The others I carried on going to work throughout and the pain was no worse than a very bad period. I took paracetamol and ibuprofen and a big pad changed hourly was enough for the bleeding. My worst was at 10.5 wks and I had a few hrs of proper contractions before I passed a lot of blood and clots.

Be kind to yourself. Take painkillers regularly. A hot water bottle on your tummy or between your legs can help. If you are really sore you can ask for a prescription of strong co-codamol or dihydrocodeine - I had these from EPU and they did help.

Oh I’m so so sorry it’s just shit isn’t it ,I still think of mine a few years down the line ! I miscarried twins around 12 weeks ,I had bright red blood but no cramping and no pain at all, i went from having baby’s with heartbeats to them not being able to find anything but ´pregnancy tissué at the scan after the bleeding
If I am super honest I wish someone would have told me to go down the surgical route as apposed to the tablets you insert
I went through 15 hours of contractions to birth the so called pregnancy tissue remaining and I could not leave the bathroom because I was bleeding so heavily
I ended up having to have surgery anyway as all the pregnancy tissue didn’t come out, however I had period type pain after surgery and period heavy bleeding for 2weeks and would personally with my experience say I wish someone with similar things going on would told me just to have the surgery
Of course everyone’s stand point are different as are people’s experiences, and I’m sure you want to hear it from all sides , sending you healing x

Babyjune21 · 28/01/2021 10:17

I don’t have any advice but I just want to send you a big hug Flowers xx

Sorry for your loss.

I had one at 6 weeks, I had brown spotting for a week then heavy bleeding and cramps for 2-3 days although it wasn't continuously heavy, it came and went. No evidence of a sac or anything though, maybe it was too early. The cramps were not too painful except at the very beginning. I didn't bother with pregnancy tests, just waited for my next period which came on time about 2-3 weeks later.

When I had surgical management for a miscarriage at 10 weeks however it took 3 weeks to get a negative test and I didn't have a period for 8 weeks.
