Sausages and toxoplasmosis

I'm freaking out about toxoplasmosis. I'm just over 7 weeks. I made a sausage casserole on Sunday and am so paranoid the sausages weren't cooked through enough. I fried the sausages (fat ones) in a frying pan for 20mins then put them on a plate to rest for about 30mins whilst I was preparing everything else, not sure if they were fully cooked at this point and they would have cooled down. Then I simmered them on the hob with tinned tomatoes and stock etc. for 30mins. When it came to eating them they were hot but not as hot as the sauce and I've got myself in a right state that they weren't cooked properly. Am I being crazy?!

Yes you are being a bit crazy
You have cooked sausages for 50 minutes. How could they not be cooked?

Chelyanne · 26/01/2021 10:48

Not much you can do about it now tbh. Only time will tell if they were cooked throughly enough. Hopefully as you cooked them beforehand they will be fine but be on the lookout for any ill effects over the next week.

Next time fry or simmer a little longer just to be on the safe side.

Yes. Fifty minutes is about twice as long as you need to cook sausages.

BlueberryPancake21 · 26/01/2021 10:51

It's really unlikely - they were probably cooked enough. Try not to worry.

Sarahandduck18 · 26/01/2021 10:53

You should think about talking to your GP/midwife about having this degree of anxiety. It’s not uncommon in pregnancy but you don’t want it to get any more severe.

Flippyferloppy · 26/01/2021 10:54

I actually think it's really sad (borderline abusive), how women are made to feel guilty over every tiny thing they do/eat/drink during pregnancy. Humanity would never have survived this long if we were that fragile...
Please go easy on yourself OP.

They will definitely have been cooked after 50 mins, they were probably cooked after the first bout in the oven alone. They probably lost heat quicker than the sauce when you served them, just because they have more exposed surface area. Like pasta. I know it's so scary being pregnant with so many percieved threats but i honestly think you are fine.

If you are still worried, life is too short so why not request a blood test for toxoplasmosis, i am pregnant and did this recently because i unwittingly came into contact with cat poo (that's another, gross story!). NHS will do it, speak to your midwife or GP. But I'm only suggesting that to set your mind at rest if you can't stop worrying - NOT because i think your sitiation warrants it clinically.

dementedpixie · 26/01/2021 10:56

Maybe buy a food probe then you can check food temperatures

SunnySideUp2020 · 26/01/2021 11:50

If you are so worried about toxoplasmosis, i would ask for a test to see if you had it already.
I did apparently so i am immune. One thing less to worry about.
I think you definitely are being overly worked up about the sausages but i totally understand the anxiety in pregnancy when so much is made to make us see the harm everywhere. And that if we are not being OVERLY cautious we are negligent or something.
Ask your GP about the blood test maybe?

BatPrint · 26/01/2021 15:09

Thanks everyone for your replies. I'm normally a worrier but my anxiety has gone crazy since I found out I was pregnant Sad and I'm worrying about everything. I've made an appointment with my doctor to discuss my anxiety as I don't think I'm coping very well. I'll probably ask my MW about the blood test as well and see what she thinks as it would hopefully put my mind at rest.

So first off, I would be you exactly worrying about it so I understand. However when it’s not yourself it’s much easier to see things more clear. You will be fine op, think about how many times you have had sausages like that before and not had food poisoning. For what it’s worth as a kid I used to eat a raw sausage (without my parents knowing obviously) it was my fave... I would not recommend that 🙈 but I never got sick. So you will be fine :)

Buddytheelf85 · 27/01/2021 10:52

It’s not particularly likely that the sausages contained toxoplasmosis in any event but it would definitely be killed after 50 minutes cooking if they did!
