Postpartum pain in bottom and lower back (right side)

Hi,

I wondered if anyone could shed some light and give me some advice.

I had a section now 19 weeks ago and at first felt ok. I had pain when trying to lie on my right side in bed.

For the last couple of months at least I have had pain in my lower back right side abs right buttock. Sometimes goes down my thigh. It is getting worse and in the morning it is so bad I’m almost in tears and usually I have quite a good pain threshold.

Anyone experienced anything similar and what was it?

Thank you

It sounds like sciatica, in normal life I'd tell you to visit an osteopath but at the moment that might not be possible, worth calling around any local to you though, or next best would be a physio.

@Garman
Do you think so? I’ve been Googling it and it doesn’t go right down to the bottom of my leg. I didn’t know sciatica could be so sore. Trying to get out of bed is awful. I’m getting to the point I’m dreading going to bed.

Sciatica doesn't have to go all the way down your leg at all, I get it just in my butt cheek and top of my leg. Keep your knees together getting out of bed, but yeah that's particularly awful to do, I just try to do it as quick as possible and deal with the pain, trying to move slowly just prolongs the torture!

It's especially common during or after pregnancy because your pelvis and muscles all move out of place and can get misaligned etc.

@Garman
Thank you. I’d rather have another section than the pain I get in the morning Shock
I shall try that and see if it helps.
How long have you had it for?

My local osteopath is seeing me regularly in pregnancy and was a brilliant help when I had sciatica.

Fingerscrossed11 · 23/01/2021 22:26

@WashableVelvet what were your symptoms?
Glad you’re getting some relief

Yep, sciatica. Get thee to a physio ASAP- I had it during both my pregnancies, and when I finally accepted I needed help, the physio fixed me within 3 sessions! Don’t believe in osteopaths, all a bit woo as far as I can tell... My sciatica also didn’t go all the way down my leg. The physio gave me some tips on ways to stand up, for example, and sitting techniques which made a world of difference.

Garman · 23/01/2021 22:49

Osteopaths aren't woo, chiropractors are.

I've had it years, exacerbated by 2 pregnancies and my job. Managed well between osteopath, deep tissue massage and exercise, just flares sometimes.

Ongoing pelvic girdle pain, occasionally sciatica. It doesn’t go all the way down the leg.

Mmm, still not convinced by osteopathy, having seen one for my son after an instrumental birth and shoulder dystocia.

But the end result is, OP there is help out there!

So I had a physio appointment the other day and she pushed abs pulled one leg and felt movement, other (problem side) was stiff, didn’t move as much. She said yes there’s a problem. Was shown a pelvis (plastic) and that one side on my pelvis was misaligned or out of joint. Was told it could happen during my c section which I believe I did as I was pushed down from my ribs and a lot of pulling and pushing involved. Having had a section before I was really surprised as to what was happening anyway born okay so I was happy. Now enough the issue still remains abs after seeing physio, putting a leg over my shoulder to manipulate pelvis back into place, the problem is still there. Has anyone else had this?
