Dating scan- 2 sacs but only one baby

Hello,

I’ve just got back from my first 12 week scan and I’m actually 13W5days. :)

It all went well and the baby is healthy- wouldn’t get in the right position for all the measurements though haha. A lot of prodding on my full bladder

The sonographer asked me if I had any bleeding during pregnancy.. I’d only had some spotting early on which I presumed to be “normal”

On the ultrasound there was one baby and then next to it was another ‘empty’ sac- the sonographer left the room to get another colleague to come and take a look. They both said it looks as though there was two pregnancy’s at some point the sac measured 21mmx23mm. They still couldn’t see anything in the sac, it appeared empty. They said it should of gone by the next scan as the baby grows.

Has anyone else experienced anything similar at the 12 week scan? I’ve done some googling but most answers are coming from people who have had early scans then by the 12 week scan the second sac had disappeared.

Thanks

Anyone had a similar experience?? I did a bit of Googling and apparently it’s called vanishing twin syndrome

I Gad this. It was first spotted at an early scan, but the sac was still visible at the 12 week scan. Gone by 20 week scan, it gets reabsorbed x

I had this spotted at my 12 week scan (actually I was 11weeks and 2 days gone at my 20 week scan.

My friend had this happen. She started bleeding and miscarried the one sac but the second sac with baby was fine.

Thanks for the reassurance guys.. I wish I’d asked more questions at the scan.

Guess we will see at the 20week scan.

I was told that it was nothing to worry about and it's really common, especially in women over thirty (!) I had no other issues throughout pregnancy and have a healthy baby boy!

This happened to me recently, one baby had stopped growing at 8 weeks, scan put me at 12+5. I did some googling too but couldn’t find much info, the sonographer and my midwife were much more helpful. I had my 20 week scan two weeks ago and the baby that had stopped growing had been reabsorbed, but the sac was still visible.
You can always talk it over with your midwife if you have questions, I text mine and she called me back the same day.

Happened with my first pregnancy (I was 19, so definitely common at any age)

I had early scans at 5 weeks, 7 weeks and 9 weeks. Saw two heartbeats at 7 weeks and 1 baby measuring a week smaller at 9 weeks. Went for dating scan (was 13 weeks) and the smaller baby had passed at around 11 weeks. Baby was still there, hadn’t reabsorbed yet. By 20 weeks everything looked like a normal singleton pregnancy, no sign of twin.

He’s now almost 6 and he’s great
