Trans abdominal ultrasound 5+5 - ectopic?

Hello All,

Feeling very depressed right now so hoping some of you can shed some light on this for me. Just got back from A and E after having a Trans abdominal ultrasound as I was experiencing pain on the left hand side of my groin. No bleeding just cramping. They were unable to see any gestational sac and I had a HCG level of 273 which seems very low. Just wondered if any of you have had a similar experience and what your outcomes were? I don’t have high hopes for my pregnancy but I am actually very scared about ectopic pregnancies and the complications that can arise from them.

To top it off I can’t have an internal ultrasound until Monday as no clinics are open over the weekend!

Thanks in advance for any of your responses!

It is possible you have a normal pregnancy (but your dates are off) and that's why your hcg is low. Unless you are in a lot of pain I would suggest measuring hcg again on Monday to see if it doubles. If it does, the pregnancy may be normal and you'll be able to see a gestational sac in the uterus in about one week's time.

Another possibility is an early miscarriage, hence low hcg. Again, you need to see how your hcg changes.

An ectopic pregnancy is also possible, but unlikely. Unfortunately, a scan on Monday may be too early to determine what is happening, but unless you are in severe pain, it is far more likely the pregnancy is intrauterine.

I hope you get the answers soon.

Hi @anniebu thanks for responding you’ve definitely calmed me down a bit! Thank you for your advice, hoping I can get seen first thing Monday morning!

@VR1991 sorry you are going through this horrible wait!
They will be able to see a lot more with a trans vaginal scan, it could be that the trans abdominal one just isn’t picking it up (I have a tilted uterus so for early scans they can never see anything clearly with a trans abdominal). I’m keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Same thing happened to me!

Suffered horrendous pain like on floor cramping.

Had to wait 10 days for a rescan your HCG needs to be over 1500 for a gestational sac to be seen!

When I had my first scan my HCG was literally 66!!!! At 5+1 then I went back and there he was with a heartbeat and all

I'm 18 weeks now ❤️❤️

Thanks @Tealchoc and @Northernlass101 for your posts! Really hoping I get to know more tomorrow. Don’t know if I can bare waiting for another week to find out what’s going on.

@Northernlass101 did they explain to you why your HCG was so low in week 5? I feel like mine should be in the thousands now and can’t find reasons other than miscarriage and ectopic for it being low. Positive to know that yours was and you’re at 18 weeks though!

HCG
66 13/11
875 14/11
2237 16/11 (day I saw him + heartbeat) 5 weeks 6 days

It took 3 days for my HCG to go up enough to see him! Had another 24/11 was lik 68,000!

As long as your HCG is doubling it's fine it's not so much the numbers ❤️ I think it's every 24/48 hrs.

Also! My scans were all endovagonal!!! Too little for normal ultrasound
