Sac visible on scan but negative test

Hi all,

New here and not very familiar with the forum acronyms so please bear with me!

I attended an ultrasound for suspected ovarian cysts on Sunday. She did a tummy scan then an internal and during the internal she asked when my last period was because she could see a gestational sac in the correct place for an early pregnancy.

Although I do track periods and suspected ovulation - December was a funny one as I didn't come on at the time I thought I would. I was very late and when I did get what I thought was a period it was super light with no cramps or usual symptoms. The lady who scanned me says this may have been implantation. She told me to take a test but not to worry if it didn't show positive as it seems early and when I call my doc for results next week to have taken one that morning.

So obviously I was delighted by all of this although dates don't seem to be right unless I ovulated very late last month. I immediately bought tests and hoped I'd get a positive straight away but no such luck. Having drank a lot of water for the ultrasound I decided to retest the next morning.... negative :-(

So now I'm very confused and feeling a bit all over the place. The lady who did my scan was so sure and even showed me the very clear little sac in my womb. Having googled it all I am almost certain if I was pregnant enough for a sac then I'd have the hormone in my system for a positive test...

Could I have miscarried and the sac is still there? Feeling so up and down with it would just really like to know either way.

Thanks in advance ladies x

What test did you use? I wouldn’t worry too much just now, Maybe retest in 2-3 days. I’m sure everything will be just fine and it’s maybe too early for a positive as the sonographer said. Good luck x

Thanks for the reply - used a clear blue so should be reliable. I will just wait and see xx

If there was a sac, then your HCG levels must be over 1000 (once they are at 1000, generally the gestational sac is visible on a scan). So id expect to see a very positive pregnancy test.

Id test again in a day or 2 and if negative again, id be questioning this at the EPU.

Good luck and i hope you get the result you want xx

Tests show positive way before a sac is visible. It can't be early to test positive if you see a gestational sac... If by any chance you test positive in the coming days this pregnancy will have nothing to do with what was identified as sac at your appointment. However there is such a thing as a pseudo-sac. This is when a small amount of intrauterine fluid looks like an early gestational sac. Chances are this is what your sonographer saw. Another possibility is that you had been pregnant but it stopped developing very early and the hormones went down again. Try and get another sonographer to scan you again. Take care!
