Is it possible to guess sex at 28 scan?

Hi all - I had a 28 week growth scan today (didn't know sex of baby and hadn't planned to find out) and saw an image of both legs of the baby upside down (at least I think it was both legs) - I couldn't see any boy bits at all between the legs which makes me think it's a girl. But could I have got this wrong? Wouldn't I have seen the umbilical cord somewhere? I guess I'm just asking has anyone else been convinced they knew gender after a 28 week ultrasound and been proved wrong?

It’s fun to guess but don’t assume you’re right. Remember even trained sonographers get it wrong sometimes

Thanks @Oneandabean. I was actually disappointed I'd guessed it as we really wanted a surprise so it's good to know I might be wrong even at 28 weeks.

I had a scan at 32 weeks with my DD and the doctor said she was 95% sure she was a boy. I think the bigger they get the harder it is to tell so with an untrained eye you might of been mistaken.

Ooh thanks @PutOnAHappyFace - that's good to know u can get it wrong in the later stages X

That's counter intuitive, I would have thought the bigger they get, the easier it becomes to identify the gender..

Imagine if you zoom right in on something to make it "bigger", it becomes much harder to see with clarity. You can't zoom out so easily when they're big.

At our 28 week scan, the sonographer thought DS was a girl (we already knew) and it wasn't until the end of the scan that she said "ohhhh a scrotum, you're right it is a boy".

I had lots of growth scans with DS, I didn’t know what he was and never once seen any boy bits so I don’t think it’s always easy to tell. I’m having a girl now and had a scan at 26 weeks and in all honestly if the sonographer hadn’t pointed out the little details I’d never have known what I was looking at.

It is fun to guess though!

I was wondering this too as I want to keep it a surprise (though it's hard not to look when in the scans) as I'm having a few growth scans later in the pregnancy.

I had weekly scans for DC1 and I couldn’t tell.
Every sonographer asked if we wanted to know (ranged from 75-95% confident they knew) but I was adamant I wanted a surprise.
So glad I was so stubborn (when everyone else was desperate for me to find out).

Thanks all, I'm definitely reassured now that I don't know, so glad the surprise isn't ruined
