Sleep positions when pregnant

Im nearly 13 weeks pregnant and have been sleeping on left side as this is what I have read is best for baby. For the last week I have been waking up with awful back pain, especially on my left side.
I've ordered a pregnancy pillow from John Lewis and hoping that helps.

Should you sleep on your left side and has anyone slept on their right? Just want to find out what others have done and doing as I just want the baby to be safe but fed up of waking up in pain.

Never heard of sleeping on your left being better for the baby, you can sleep on any side. The only thing to avoid is sleeping on your back

ShalomToYouJackie · 04/01/2021 08:10

Oh and sleeping on your back is to be avoided in third trimester, didn't read that you're just out of 1st trimester so sleep however you want!

Xyzzzzz · 04/01/2021 08:11

Just avoid sleeping on your back, I ordered a cheap pregnancy pillow via Amazon. Best thing ever.

Left side is best for blood flow to the baby. Pregnancy pillow should make a world of difference!

HungryHippo20 · 04/01/2021 08:21

I sleep on both sides, have read left is better too (it's something to do with blood flow and this is the side you're encouraged to lie on if you're having any concerns with kicks later on) but either side ok, rather than back but as PP says this is really just in third trimester. What I would say though is there's no harm getting yourself used to it now as you can just suddenly switch to not sleeping on your back!

I have a pregnancy pillow which I used earlier on but now I'm 30 weeks I find just a normal cushion between knees and it's much better/easier to get around when turning! Hubby was constantly getting whacked by the big pregnancy pillow 🤣🤣

I do find that I have to turn almost hourly overnight because my hips hurt. The joys of pregnancy 😆

You can sleep on your back (or however you like) until the third trimester. You may as well enjoy it while you can.

The evidence of left side v right side isn’t conclusive or strong at all, so don’t worry too much about which side - it’s more important that you get some sleep.

Fairywings123 · 04/01/2021 08:30

I sleep on both sides, constantly switching during the night (now 16+2), MW said to avoid sleeping on your back but only from the third trimester onwards so is fine up until then, with my DS i slept sides and back up until 24 weeks, then only sides as I was massive by then and he felt too heavy to sleep on my back, congratulations! I'm 30wks. I sleep on both sides but try and sleep on the left more and avoid the back (which feels not okay the bigger you get). I started off like you but hip pains makes it impossible to stay on the left. Your pillow should really help and don't be afraid to get a little wedge one from Amazon to slip under your bump or hips if you need it in addition.

Nimsay1 · 04/01/2021 08:58

Sleeping on either side is fine for baby, it's just that sleeping on the left is meant to also be better for your own body - improving blood circulation and aiding digestion and waste travelling through your intensities.

You should not sleep on your back from around week 20, not just third trimester.

A pregnancy pillow helped me when I was pregnant, as i sleep on my front it helped me get used to sleeping on my side.

MimiDaisy11 · 04/01/2021 10:29

I had back pain from sleep on my side. I think it was caused as the top leg was out forward and I think it was stretching my back too much. Since I started sleeping with legs on top of each other then it's gone away. I try with a pregnancy pillow and I think I'm starting to get used to it. But I think if you have spare regular pillows they can work well too and sometimes I find them more comfortable.

VeeVeeBee77 · 04/01/2021 11:07

I sleep on both sides, was a side sleeper before pregnancy anyway so didn't have to adjust to not being on my back which was good. Left side is meant to be slightly better for circulation but no problem at all if you prefer right.

I'm 33 weeks and really struggling with sleep! I was a front-sleeper pre-pregnancy but turned a lot so basically all positions.
I only stopped sleeping on my front once it got uncomfortable (~15 weeks?). Now I alternate sides but my midwife said it's ok to sleep on your back a bit if it's the only way you're comfortable (I have had terrible back pain throughout and my hips have also started in the last few weeks!)

shouldistop · 04/01/2021 11:35

Sleep however you're comfortable. I slept on my front until second trimester then a mixture of back and sides til third trimester then sides.

SunnySideUp2020 · 04/01/2021 11:38

As it has been said, sleep however you want!
In third trimester it is not recommended to be on your back and on the front personally i feel baby move too much and the bump is in the way.
So i sleep on sides but that being said if i am struggling i just sleep on my back.
As long as you don't feel dizzy...

Honestly just enjoy sleeping the way you want for the next 15 weeks 😄

grey12 · 04/01/2021 11:42

I have ALWAYS slept on my side except when I'm pregnant Confused I just start sleeping on my back! Weird.... but never had any problems with sleeping when pregnant which a lot of women do. So I would say, try to sleep on your side but don't stress too much. Just be comfortable and rest!!!
