HELP!! 30 Weeks losing weight now 8% percentile

Lucindaa · 27/12/2020 18:44

First time mum to be here.
Everything was fine, baby was 52% percentile at 25 weeks then got diagnosed with Gestational Diabietes at 26 weeks and was asked to change my diet.

28 weeks growth scan 13% percentile

30 weeks growth scan 8% percentile

Diabietes Consultant understands I'm now restricting my diet because I'm trying to control my blood/sugar which isn't even that high.

Up to week 25 weeks belly was rock hard then it went soft and now decided I'm going to eat what I want when I feel like it and my stomach has gone back to being rock hard!

Any tips on what to eat ladies with any experience and help me with a growth spurt and get me back on track!

Lu x

Gestational Diabietes is temporary.

You need to just eat normally and let them manage your blood sugar. If you starve yourself of carbs and protein and the good sugars obviously it could impact you and the baby.

Palomin0 · 27/12/2020 20:39

Please follow the advice of your gestational diabetes midwife/consultant regarding diet and maintaining your sugar levels. Although your sugars may not be "that high" it's really important they are maintained within self levels to protect your baby.

I had GD in my last pregnancy (fingers crossed not in this one) and was able to maintain my sugars by following a low GI diet- I didn't remove carbs, but ate those such as brown rice, wholemeal pasta, dark seeded bread or new potatoes paired with protein and fat. My baby, similarly to you, had slow growth throughout my pregnancy and was born full-term on the 2nd percentile but has grown into a perfectly healthy toddler. Some babies are just naturally smaller

@Palomin0 the consultant should be precribing metaformin based on your levels. My consultant completely screwed up my diet and could not see them restricting my diet affecting my baby growth. I would have never have had a growth spurt in my 3rd trimester if it wasn't for my DH approaching my GP on my behalf and booking an appoitment with them.

Lucindaa · 27/12/2020 22:43

@Palomin0 my consultant is useless! It even says in my notes I'm restricting and fasting and that is actually causing me to feel constantly hungry and the growth scans are now making me feel upset.

@Makino what did they do for you? Did you catch up? I feel this is exactly what is happening to me!

I had something similar happen. Got diagnosed with GD at 28 weeks and put on insulin. I was so caught up in making sure my blood sugar levels were within range I paid no attention to my calorie intake and baby dropped from 30th percentile at 28 weeks to 15th at week 32 and 9th by week 34. The consultant was worried and talked about having to deliver at 36 weeks if the growth didn't pick up in case it was a placenta issue.

Once I realised there was a calorie deficit, I changed to a high protein diet (lots of nuts, greek yoghurt, meat, eggs) and 2 weeks later the growth had increased to a level my consultant was very happy with. She arrived at 38 weeks weighing 6lbs 11 Oz.

Makino · 28/12/2020 16:14

@Lucindaa I caught up by drinking a vegan protein shake that had stevia as a sugar subsitute and went back to my old diet.

My GD consultant also increased my metaformin dosage from 1 to 2.

I went from 13% to 19% and delivered 7lbs 2oz boy at 39 weeks

Makino · 28/12/2020 16:28

@MariaDingbat all I got was a sheet from the GD consultant with good and bad foods and told to monitor my blood/sugar.

Just like you I became addicted to watching my diet and next thing you know I'm going through growth scans because they are concerned about the baby's growth!

Can anyone recommend a protein shake?

I used a protein powders by a company called Wyldsson, low in sugar! I used to have two scoops with milk.

Keep us updated and good luck

I am so excited to see that you are pregnant and so far along @Lucindaa! Back in May I was called believinForAMiracle ... I forgot my password. Anyway we were both trying to conceive , then I was pregnant after years of trying like you and you had just had bad news when I last heard from you back then.
Since then I lost my first pregnancy at 8 weeks in July ... then I became pregnant again in august! (20 weeks) I’m thrilled to see that you are so far along!
Praying that you get on top of this gestational diabetes.

Lucindaa · 30/12/2020 12:34

I'm so sorry about the loss in July but like I have always said we had to remain positive and and finally you have a 20 week trooper!! Woohoo. When your due date?

I have my apppointment with GD consultant this afternoon. Going to ask them to look at my diet and up my dosage!!

You have some good advice here OP - definitely better to eat a healthy diet and treat any high sugars with metformin/insulin, than to restrict too much. However, restricting intake isn’t the only reason for a growth drop off, sometimes your placenta just isn’t doing the job quite well enough - so it’s not necessarily entirely within your control, you just have to do your best. Hopefully they’ll go through your growth charts and sugars etc at your appointment and give you a good idea of plan going forward as well - and fingers crossed baby bounces back up the centiles for you.

LittleTiger007 · 30/12/2020 21:19

I hope your appointment went well today @Lucindaa.

My due date is 20th May. I’m so excited for you and your super rainbow baby!

Lucindaa · 03/01/2021 20:02

@LittleTiger007 appointment went well, they have put me on insullin!
