5+2 gestational sac present but no yolk sac?

Hi all,

Long story cut short... went for nhs scan to confirm pregnancy since my LMP i would be 5+2, gestational sac present but no yolk sac. Advised it was a strong possibility i have had a missed miscarriage again. However to confirm they took bloods to look at HCG levels which were sitting at 2,600 which is normal for this gestation and then took them again yesterday to compare. They advised my levels had doubled which was what is suppose to happen if the pregnancy was developing which they advised it was... another scan next thurs to confirm what is going on.

Has this happened to anyone else and what was the outcome good or bad I would like realistic outcomes.

Thank you all 😊 xx

Im really not sure why your hospital would say this could be a missed miscarriage at this point. Its way too early to know that.

I had a scan at 5+3 and i had a sac and a yolk sac, i went back 3 days later and there was a 4mm foetal pole.
What im saying is that things progress really quickly and you may have gone for a scan today, or tomorrow and there could well be a yolk sac.

As hard as it is going to be. Its going to he a waiting game for a week or 2 but id say you are still very much in the game. Xx

So many posts about early scans worries, it really makes me wonder why do they still scan women before 7 weeks when there is no actual concern of excessive bleeding or suspected ectopic.
It brings so much anxiety and raises so many questions simply because it is far too early to see anything significant or even predict the viability of a pregnancy.
And why on earth would they even talk about missed miscarriage?!!!

OP, at this stage things progress differently for every pregnancy. Measurements are inaccurate, visibility not always optimal, actual ovulation/conception date can vary, and very often there is nothing conclusive coming out of such early scans.
Your hcg is the only reliable info you have and it is very positive!
Please try to forget about the scan and stay positive and trust your body to do the work.
In early pregnancy a lot happens in a couple of days/weeks. Just because today you didn't see what you expected doesn't mean it's not working out.

Why did they scan you at only 5 weeks? Just confirming the pregnancy seems like an odd reason, a urine test is totally accurate.
Scans that early are so hit and miss, it’s not unusual to not see a yolk sac at that date so it doesn’t necessarily point to miscarriage yet.

How long of a gap will there be between the first scan and the update on Thursday?

I'm surprised the NHS agreed to scan at 5 weeks too - even with history of ectopic they usually say you have to wait until 6 weeks as anything before that is inclusive. It's way too early to say either at this point but if your hcg is doubling then that should be taken as a good sign x

I had similar in October last year. The empty sac was measuring 18mm at 6 weeks then 26mm 7 days later and was still empty although my HCG levels were rising as normal and actually quite high. It was called a blighted ovum.

I believe once the sac reaches 16-18mm and is empty a blighted ovum can be diagnosed. I think it can also be called anembryonic pregnancy.

It could also be that it's just too early to see anything. Fingers crossed you get an answer soon either way. I also don't know why the NHS agree to scan so early, unless it was to rule out an ectopic.

I just went through this myself after having a miscarriage before. I went for a scan because of bleeding and severe cramps but they only confirmed the sac and nothing else and said I was about 4-5 weeks and was to come back the week after. I went back on Friday for another scan and there was a yolk sac, fetus and also had a heartbeat. I was stressing the whole week as it was disappointing the first time. It could just be that’s it’s too early for anything to show. Good luck and hope everything is okay x
