Sonographers/mum of girls - is this really a girl?

Had my 16 week scan today and sonographer wrote down the gender whilst we looked away so we could have a gender reveal.

The sonographer has said it's a girl, but it looks boy-like to me. We've announced to family that we are having a girl - now I'm panicking that it's wrong! My mother in law has already cried with happiness that we're having a girl, please help!

Is this really what a 16 week baby girl looks like?

Although I'm dates 16+1 from 12 week dating scan, I think I'm a few days behind that based on conception date, if that makes any difference when interpreting this scan.

I'm sure mil wil be just as delighted with a grandson, as will all of you if it's a boy. I'll be honest i didn't know it was possible to tell at 16 weeks.

Thanks @musicalfrog and I know you're right! Yeah private gender scans run from 16 weeks onwards. But now I'm wondering if it would have been better for us to hold off for another week in case things were clearer for the sonographer by then.

But also if the sonographer was unsure, surely she would have made that clear to us?

She seemed really confident of the gender.

I have a boy and a girl but have never had a scan to find out the sex but I do have a friend who was told girl even though it looked like there was a penis/testicles on show. Seemingly it's quite common for girls to have swollen labia/clitoris in utero and even after birth.

The sonographer will be aware of this and take it into account I assume. If it's wrong it'll just be a funny story - my niece should've been my nephew and looked rather fetching in her dinosaur sleepsuits 😁

I'm not a sonographer but this is my scan at exactly 17 weeks, by my 20 week scan it was unmistakably a boy!

It could be the cord or a little willy in your picture. I can't see the three lines they can look for to say girl more conclusively than the absence of a willy either. But at 16 weeks you are on the cusp of being able to say so I think wait until your 20 week scan!

Someone more qualified than mr might be more help.

Those pics don’t actually clearly show what it is - not quite the right angle/image. Certainly couldn’t confirm girl from that. The sonographer may well have seen properly as she scanned through, but the pic doesn’t demonstrate that. Just wait until your 20 week scan to confirm. Congratulations on your pregnancy :)
