Worried - How many weeks pregnant until you see the sac on an ultrasound?

Went for an ultrasound on my pelvis and an internal vaginal exam yesterday morning to check for pcos or endometriosis as I’ve had painful and irregular periods for over a year, lady who scanned me said she couldn’t see anything worrying. Told her I’ve not had a period for over a month now and she said to go buy a pregnancy test to do at home just in case. Went and bought one and did it ok afternoon yesterday when I got home, all 3 positive so did a clear blue digital and that said positive 2-3 weeks. Anyway my question is, is If my last period was on the 28th of October wouldn’t that make me around 5 ish weeks as I’m sure doctors go by the first day of your last periods for how far along you are? And if so, how come the lady who did the ultrasound on me yesterday morning didn’t mention being able to see a sac or anything as I’m sure you can see that on a scan when 5 weeks pregnant? Just worried because she didn’t say anything so does that mean there wasn’t any sac there.. not sure if I’m just worrying myself here but I’d love some advice from anyone. Thanks x

Just thought I’d add as well that I’m aware that the ultrasound I went for yesterday was not for pregnancy as I had no idea I even was until AFTER this ultrasound but what I’m saying is that it was the same type of scan you have when you are pregnant and she was scanning the same area that you would if you were pregnant if that makes sense so that’s why I’m worried that nothing was said about there being a yolk sac in there..

5 weeks would be incredibly early to see anything on a scan, especially if the sonographer wasn't specifically looking for a pregnancy. I once had a scan at 6 weeks to look for a healthy pregnancy and they couldn't see anything. The next morning, before I went for surgery, they scanned me again and found a sac measuring the perfect size for gestation. I think it's very tricky this early on. Are they going to offer you another scan?

Crustmasiscoming · 01/12/2020 05:18

I have had scan at 6wks 3 days and you could see something, but only just. I can't imagine there is much to see at 5 weeks, especially not if you aren't specifically looking for it.

Thanks for your replies both of you it’s reassured me. @MsFrog I have not yet told anyone I’m pregnant so once I do I think they will offer me a scan at around 6/7/8 weeks as I had problems in my last pregnancy with my son.

@Crustmasiscoming thank you that’s put my mind at ease a bit. Just a bit worried about my pregnancy test lines they’re not very dark

@Amber125 line darkness varies a LOT brand to brand because they have different thresholds. If clear blue is saying 2-3 then that's roughly what your HCG levels expressed in urine are consistent with.

If youd like to monitor with testing- you could use a cheap strip brand to test every few days with first morning urine (bear in mind these looked weak for me until week 8 and they only ever get to a particular strength of line before they stop progressing). You could also use a clearblue dates one in 1 week and it should say 3+

Hi
You say 5 weeks, but you're not really as 5 weeks would be later this week, also don't forget you may ovulate later so you could actually be closer to 4 weeks. Also did you have a normal abdominal scan, or trans vaginal? The normal US is really poor in comparison to TV

I thought I was 5 weeks+6 days on my second baby (not second pregnancy so seen quite a lot), and had a scan, you could literally just see a foetal pole and very little else. My consultant measured me and said it was 5+1 and she needed to give me a few weeks, it was far too early, plus that took a bit of finding also via a TV scan, literally nothing via normal US.

the next time you could see so much more, so try not to worry as you're so early. I recall my consultant saying in early pregnancy that the foetus fries so much in a week, she was right! I had many scans with all my pregnancies, try to think positively and don't fret, it's far too early to see anything significant - good luck and report back! I'll keep checking the messages 😎

I went for a scan of my kidneys when I was 4 weeks and I told them I was pregnant so she actually tried to have a peek and couldn't see anything at all. It was just too early. A sac appeared later, more like 5+. But they were specifically looking for it. I really wouldn't worry, maybe book an early scan soonish (I really recommend waiting until 7 weeks though) to put your mind at rest.
Remember you could ovulate late also. I know I do so I always adjust a bit for that when counting how many weeks I am!

Amber125 · 01/12/2020 07:49

@TheDaydreamBelievers thank you for your reply I’ll do that, I’ll just keep testing each day with those cheap ones and then I’m going to buy a clear blue digi again in another week to make sure it says 3+, I’ll be nervous until I see that 3+ On the screen Grin

@custardbear hiya thanks for replying Smile it was both, but I guess as she wasn’t specifically looking for anything to do with pregnancy (just cysts) then maybe that’s why nothing was said. Thank you though you’ve put me at ease lol as I was worrying. I’ll phone up and see when I can get a scan for in the next few weeks, thank youGrin xx

@fourteen6 ahh thank you for that, I always forget you can ovulate a bit late, and with my periods being irregular and all over the place for the last year then it’s definitely a possibility that I did ovulate late lol. Going to phone my gp today and try and get a scan arrangedSmile

If you don’t have regular periods then going off the date of your last period is useless! You most likely aren’t 5 weeks and are only 4 or even a few days less so in that case there isn’t anything obvious for them to see on an ultrasound, particularly if they aren’t looking for pregnancy signs.
Try not to worry, it doesn’t mean anything bad that nothing was spotted at this scan.

SunnySideUp2020 · 01/12/2020 10:18

I had a sac visible at 5 weeks but it sadly ended in a MC. So it really doesn't mean anything at this stage.
Also, unless she does an internal scan and really look it wouldn't be obvious so early on.
Don't worry for now, give it time and if you need book a scan in 4 weeks when things will be clearer?
Good luck!

@Crustmasiscoming I've just read your comment saying you had a scan just gone 6 weeks and not much to be seen.

I went for a scan today which measured CRL 0.6mm and 6.1 weeks pregnant, no heart beat was seen so now I'm panicking I've had a MMC. Did you see a heart beat on your scan? X
