First hat after birth for baby

Probably was over thinking it, but hat for baby when they are first born, cotton or knitted?
I've got a knitted one for coming home, (Dec baby), just wonder if I need a cotton one for straight after birth?

Wasn't any helpful advice there. So you felt that justified you being rude?

@eddiemairswife

Had mine in the 60s, 2 in hospital, 2 at home. No hats. When did this become usual?
Unsurprisingly, things have changed since the 60s. “In my day” comments are not really very helpful.

@DappledThings

Eddiemairswife... Had in the 60s, why on a pregnancy forum? 🤔

How rude. Lots of things about pregnancy and birth haven't changed in generations you know. Older women have plenty of experience that can be helpful even if they haven't been pregnant for a long time and there's no reason they shouldn't be on any board that takes their interest. Don't be a dick.

This.

My first baby’s head didn’t fit any of the multiple knitted hats the hospital offered (head too big). My second baby didn’t fit either of the two knitted hats I owned (head also too big, and home birth so no hats provided by midwife). So both babies had cotton hats.

I was never offered a hat for either of my dcs (both primary age, so not that long ago) and they never wore one in the hospital. I only ever put one on them when we were going out. I didn't even know it was a thing!

@eddiemairswife

I only came on a pregnancy forum because the title of the thread caught my eye. Perhaps there should be an age-limit for some topics!!
People here have been so rude to you! I hope you don't feel unwelcome here Thanks

Hats for newbies haven't been recommended for ages unless they have temp control issues.

snapple21 · 18/11/2020 14:10

A lot of incorrect information on here. Many trusts across the UK recommend drying baby and applying a hat after delivery.

Hatepickinganame · 18/11/2020 14:28

All of mine wore hats after birth. Last one was born 6 years ago. I've packed hats for this one. Never occurred to me that the hat thing might have changed! The ones I've packed are just cotton ones. Think I've popped in 2 or 3 in case of mess or staying longer

goldielockdown2 · 18/11/2020 15:10

I had babies in 2003, 2010 and 2015 and they all had a hat put on them by the midwife, the same style and I still have them. I brought a few cotton ones with me also.
Wouldn't put a knitted one on if it's wool as that would feel scratchy on a newborn.
