Round Ligament pain & what it feels like to you?

I’m wondering if the sharp stabbing pain in my lower left abdomen is round ligament. It’s not constant, & only really effects me when I’m lying on my back or left side. I’m 5 weeks tomorrow, & I’ve had the usual light cramps that feel like the start of your period, but these feel a little more sharper & intense. It could also be trapped wind, but this sharp pain is in one plate only...

Please let me know what yours feels like, as it’s worrying me a little.

Thanks x

The best way for me to describe it was a sharp pain and made me worry the placenta had ripped off it was so intense.

It feels exactly how you describe. I always say to DH that “my muscles are ripping apart” every time I get it, the pain is so intense

Isn't 5 weeks a bit early for round ligament pain?

DramaAlpaca · 15/11/2020 20:28

I only got round ligament pain in the last couple of weeks of pregnancy.

I'd recommend you have a chat with your midwife.

KelzDaily · 15/11/2020 20:29

@Charlotte2020 - I don’t know. It’s my first time & everything is so new to me. I’m told you can get it as early as 4 weeks?

5 weeks you would feel as if you’re about to have your period. That how I felt for a couple of weeks and I was told that was just uterus/muscles stretching. Sometimes it’s on one side, middle or all over. With combination of trap wind the upper ab was firm and uncomfortable

LizzieLouLouBelle · 16/11/2020 10:28

I had pain like that a lot during 5/6/7/8 weeks. I'm fairly sure it was digestive issues. Your intestines are on the left apparently. I got round ligament pain for the first time at 11 weeks, it was very different, more like a muscle being pulled, and when sneezing/moving suddenly rather than when still.

My round ligament pain feels like I've been doing constant sit ups and has me doubled over sometimes. I didn't get that until 12 weeks onwards though

I'd also recommend talking to the midwife just to check what might be going on as 5 weeks is really early to have that symptom from what I know

KelzDaily · 16/11/2020 11:24

@loobyloo1234 - tbf, it’s probably just normal cramps & I’m being over dramatic. It’s as though all of my senses are heightened, so I’m picking up on any little pain & worrying 😅

I’ve spoken to four health professionals now, one over a 111 call, a nurse/consultant at the hospital, & two doctors, & they have all said it doesn’t sound like anything to worry about. But I’ve been scheduled for blood tests next Thursday & then once it confirms everything, they’ll set me up with an early pregnancy scan to rule out ectopic pregnancy. I feel a lot better today, & although i has a few of the same sharp pains on the one side last night (I’m told that’s where my intestines are), it could just be growing pains. I’m 5 weeks today, so by the time I go for my blood test, I’ll be 6 weeks & 3 days 🙈 the doctor I spoke to today said going on the fact I had nine positive home tests, she’s convinced I’m pregnant, & said I should live this next week as if I am. But due to the two at the hospital not being clear thick lines (although I’m 100% sure I could see both showing up, he just didn’t wait long enough before telling me), she wants to send me to have the blood test to 100000% confirm lol wish me luck! 😅

To me it feels a bit like when your ankle goes funny and needs to crack or pop combined with like a muscle cramp type pain? Usually pretty fleeting and for me it only happens if I twist or move funny or sometimes when I sneeze. I get it pretty early up to being about 20 weeks.

loobyloo1234 · 16/11/2020 11:47

Normal cramps sounds about right OP Smile

I was convinced I was having a period at 4 weeks pregnant because it felt just like period pains. Hope you don't get round ligament pains like I did, is/was a pain in the arse haha

Crazywithworry · 17/11/2020 16:18

For me round ligament pain started at 5 weeks. It was on the right side of the abdomen. We were worried about it being ectopic pregnancy so we got everything checked out. Although unusual at 5 weeks but the doctors did rule it out as round ligament pain. The pain was constant till about 7 weeks of pregnancy, then it became occasional and only happens with sudden movements. Now I am 17 weeks pregnant and for the last 2 days the pain has intensified and is more towards the middle of the abdomen. I called the ER and the nurse said it is quite normal and advised to have paracetamol and if even that doesn’t help then you might need to come into the ER. So far the paracetamol has helped. Anyone else have round ligament pain in the middle of the abdomen?

Mine felt like stabbing stains down my torso when I stop up quickly in the early first trimester.

@CrazywithworryI'm 33+6 and had really bad round ligament pain on Sunday. It started feeling like stomach ache but kind of travelled round my stomach, hips, sides and lower back. I ended up going to hospital for monitoring because my midwife was concerned the back ache could be a UTI in my kidneys or early labour (it was neither). I was offered paracetamol or codeine (I wish I'd taken the latter) and advised to have a warm bath and rest.

I had no idea just how painful and uncomfortable it would be.

YoungScrappyHungry · 17/11/2020 19:39

What a coincidence OP, I have just been having very sharp, sudden pains on my right side and Midwife Google told me it could be round ligament pain. However, I'm only 7+4 so again early to be having them apparently. I'm going to message my midwife and have a chat tomorrow, sounds like you've had some good medical advice so I'd try not to worry too much.
For me, if indeed it is round ligament, it feels very sharp, like someone stabbing a knife right down into the ovary area, much more sharp that cramping pains. Feels better when I keep still.
