Hi ladies, I went for a scan today at 22 weeks and I was caused A LOT of pain and discomfort whilst she was scanning me? Has anybody ever had this? Should I be concerned because I've had no pain with other scans and today she pushed so hard it was really painful and hard to deal withConfused

Concerned, how?

QuacksInTheDark · 05/11/2020 17:00

It can be be painful at times if the baby is in an awkward position and they can’t get an accurate measurement, it should be explained to you though so you can brace yourself for the discomfort. Did you tell the person how much it hurt?

Are you overweight or have a big belly? if so they need to press hard to get a clear image

VettiyaIruken · 05/11/2020 17:04

The bigger /further along) you are, the more they need to push ime.

In my first pregnancy my 20 week scan was so painful, mainly because he had to get the right angle of my baby and belly kept going rock hard whenever he’d press too hard. I wasn’t concerned as I knew he wouldn’t do it unless it was safe. I wasn’t overweight (I wish I was that weight now but that’s another matter) but it was just that baby was in a really awkward position.

I wouldn’t worry!

Yes!! After having 3 more scans since then with different people I'm convinced she pushed down too hard on purpose!

I was squeezing my partners hand in pain (he was allowed in at 12 weeks at my hospital) and I asked if it was normal that I felt so uncomfortable. She was so rude and dismissed my question. The following day I felt bruised but I didn't have any physical marks, I had to go back 2 weeks later for another scan because baby wasn't moving much and the lady I had was so gentle and kind. Total different experience, I think it depends on who you get! x

It shouldn’t be painful, I’ve had quite a lot of scans and they’ve never been painful, even if they have to push a bit it shouldn’t be so hard it causes you pain

penguin423 · 05/11/2020 22:22

At my 20 week scan, she was struggling to get some of the measurements and did press pretty hard. I would say it was uncomfortable and I was a bit sore for a day or two afterwards but it was fine very quickly.

My 20 week scan with my first was quite painful, felt bruised for a few days

MnM156 · 06/11/2020 00:11

My baby is usually up by my ribs so my sonographer presses hard on my ribs and it hurts but she always apologises and I am always prepared for the discomfort anyway.

TidyOmlette · 06/11/2020 00:17

They need to press hard unfortunately to get the best possible picture. Generally it’s uncomfortable, most ultrasounds are.

Inkpaperstars · 06/11/2020 01:43

I have found scans sometimes hurt quite a bit due to the pressure they use. I assume they only do what they need to do, I am overweight so maybe that is why, also I am injecting daily so my stomach is already bruised which doesn't help! I think it is fairly normal though.

ivfbeenbusy · 06/11/2020 09:39

I was really sore after mine but it's because the scan last so long as having twins and one being in an awkward position meant they had to press pretty hard. Also because it was twins they wanted one of the trainees to have a go and they weren't as gentle! 🤣

Hatepickinganame · 06/11/2020 09:44

This is my 4th pregnancy, and so far in this one I've had 6 scans (complications) not one of those or the combined scans from my previous three pregnancies ever hurt. Some slight discomfort where they've struggled to get a certain measurement but definitely not painful. I'd have said something to the sonographer!

Sheera1 · 07/11/2020 22:38

It shouldn't be painful at all. I am a size 24 and have had scans at 8 10, 12 , 14, 20, 32 and 36 weeks and not one of them was even uncomfortable.

With my first child the very first scan I had at 12 weeks was a huge male sonographer who was horrible to me. Said "yes it is a baby" really curtly and it really really hurt. Looking back I am convinced that it was some kind of malpractice tbh but I didn't know any better. I had to grip my partners hand and was nearly in tears. He rammed the sensor into my stomach so hard and kept the pressure on for ages.

My pictures were nice and clear throughout the rest of the pregnancy and every scan this time and no need for it. I would consider complaining tbh.
