Is it normal for bowel movements to smell very strongly in pregnancy?

Sorry for the heading.

I’m 34 weeks, and I know poo never smells nice (!) but when I go to the toilet it seems particularly unpleasant, at the moment. I’m eating a fairly normal diet but am on iron tablets.

Iron tablets will do that. And turn your poo black. Pregnancy plays all kinds of sadistic games on your body, I found.

Yes I noticed the black poo but didn’t want to be accused of being the poo troll so the tablets are the culprits then ...

I would have said so. I certainly wouldn't be alarmed. I always have funny poo during my period so I'd say it's all of a piece.

It’s probably the iron

Sure your nose isn’t just more sensitive? During pregnancy I was like a bloodhound. Couldn’t get on the tube without smelling someone’s dinner from last night / cigarette they’d smoked a week ago / curry house they’d walked past etc etc

Iron tablets do funny things to your stomach mind

I did have a slightly enhanced sense of smell in early pregnancy but I haven’t smelled anything else strongly. So I do think it’s me

100% the iron tablets... I was put on some earlier this year due to loosing slot of blood with my MC and the doctor did say I would get black poo but didn't warn of the other side effect 🤣. Iron tablets do rotten things to you I found!

Yup I was on iron tablets a couple of years ago (not pregnant) and the poo was awful... like tar
