Ciprofloxacin prescribed at 38 weeks

I was supposed to have my fourth c section tomorrow. However due to having an infection on the skin of my old c section scar it’s been postponed and I have been put on Ciprofloxacin.

I was prescribed these on Friday. I read online these are not recommended in pregnancy so immediately panicked and rang the doctor back. She was really nice about it and said it’s the only antibiotic for the specific bacteria that came back in my swab results. The benefits outweigh the risks and there are no ‘known’ effects. They just say this to cover their backs.

It’s keeping me up at night. Everytime I take one I google and I think I’ve read every single post about them. I’m just so scared they’re going to harm my daughter. My first born was born with a hearing loss and every pregnancy since hers I refuse to even take paracetamol. I’m so scared of taking something that will harm my baby, even though we have no idea what caused my first daughters hearing loss.

I guess I’m just wondering if anyone has been prescribed these while pregnant and everything been ok with baby? I can’t seem to find anyone who’s had to take this antibiotic while pregnant and it’s scaring me so much.

Ciprofloxacin is from the quinolone group of antibiotics. Have a read of this - sounds quite reassuring

@mouldygrapes Thank you so much for your reply, I did see that one and I’m hoping they’re right and the chances of anything happening are super low. I’m hopefully going to meet my baby next Friday. I’m just going to be so anxious for such a long time over it I think. Always wondering if it’s harmed her in some way 😭
