Hi everyone,

Recently found out that I am 4 weeks pregnant (YAY!)

But even though I have now put down the cigs as hard as it has been, I have been drinking and smoking up until the day I found out (2 days ago)

Generally smoked 10 a day
Had a heavy night of drinking last weekend and a few weeks before that. No other alcohol in between.

I'm terrified of what damage I have caused. I can't stop feeling like i'm already an awful mother for doing this to my baby.

Can I still go on to have a successful pregnancy? Has anyone else done this?? I feel terrible.

It'll be fine. Two days before I found out I was pregnant this time I drank 3 bottles of wine on one night, yes 3! I was annoyed because I mistook implantation bleeding for AF and thought I was out, turns out I wasnt. No problems identified so far and now 26 weeks!

Bl0ndi3 · 06/10/2020 14:48

I don't think baby gets passed anything from you until the placenta forms or something like that at 7/8 weeks - don't quote me on this but I looked this up myself because I used to vape and did before knew I was pregnant and found that out and was reassured. Then I drank a lot around my birthday and found out I was pregnant a few days later.

Just think that there's some pregnant women who never stop smoking or drinking or don't even know they're pregnant etc

@Sanch1 You drink in the capacities I do! But thank you, it's great to speak to people who have been in the same situation. and likewise, I had quite a heavy bleed for a few days, assumed it was AF. Nope! Was very wrong!

2 bottles of Prosecco and at least 10 cigs on Saturday night in Feb and I was miserable because of what I thought was period pains. Just decided to do a test the following Wednesday and it was positive! To be entirely honest with you I’ve probably had 3 cigs since my positive test (I’m not proud of it) and currently 36 weeks pregnant with a healthy little boy. Don’t beat yourself up

Cafeaulait27 · 06/10/2020 15:52

I drank 3 glasses of wine when I thought my period had arrived but it was actually implantation. I felt a little guilty but I don’t think it really matters.

I think you have to be an alcoholic for it to do anything (but I’m not drinking now I know of course)

Fruitloops34 · 06/10/2020 15:58

Wouldn’t worry, I was pissed the night before my positive(day period was due) and I smoked about 20 fags.
I stopped that day and that’s all that matters.
Congrats btw!

I drunk like a fish when I was expecting DD1 as it was over Christmas and following my second miscarriage. I'd given up and was extremely surprised to find out I was 6 weeks pregnant mid January. DD is perfectly fine.

I found out I was pregnant the morning after a bottomless brunch whilst rather worse for wear! Having been trying to conceive for 2 and a half years and about to embark on IVF I didn’t think I would get pregnant naturally. Best hangover cure though!

Suzi888 · 06/10/2020 16:20

I did, birthday weekend. Loads of celebrations, DH birthday, work parties, some concerts and I drank loads for about a month. Then couldn’t do my jeans up and found out I was pregnant! I also felt guilty and so upset, so I went to my G.P who reassured me that everything would be ok. She said that it would take a lot of alcohol, (alcoholic levels) throughout the pregnancy to cause damage.

Disappointedkoala · 06/10/2020 16:27

With my first I went on a massive bender, felt a bit odd still a few days later, checked my tracking app and realised it was day 37 of my cycle. No problems in pregnancy and DD is just perfect.

Think I was drunk when this one was conceived. Wink

When I was 4 weeks pregnant with my oldest and didn't know, I took a load of E and some LSD. I thought she would have 3 heads but shes perfect. A huge number of people smoke and drink before they realise they're pregnant, I really wouldn't worry about it

allfurcoatnoknickers · 06/10/2020 18:03

I was drinking like a fish for the first 7 weeks of my pregnancy. My dog had just been killed in a horrific freak accident, and I'd been told that I wouldn't be able to have a baby without intervention, so I was...not in a good place.

I took a pregnancy test when I had a hangover that wouldn't go away. turn out i was 7+3! Baby is now 15 months old and appears to be unscathed. It's SO common.

Oneandabean · 06/10/2020 18:11

I had 2 bottles of wine and a pack of cigarettes the night before I found out I was pregnant, it’s very common so don’t stress and baby will be fine. It’s more from excessive drinking regularly and smoking that problems happen. My nephews mum was drinking every weekend and smoking regularly when she found out she was 6 months pregnant, he’s totally fine (obviously not recommending that you do that)
It’s hard not to stress but you won’t have done any damage at this stage.
