Suspected chest infection?

doctorhamster · 02/10/2020 15:49

If you're coughing up yellow phlegm you probably have a chest infection.

Kittykat93 · 02/10/2020 15:51

Why did you contact the doctor if you just have a cold? Either way I'm guessing as youre coughing stuff up its a suspected chest infection.

Studentnursesos12e · 02/10/2020 15:57

It sounds like a suspected chest infection (Yellow sputum) and being online they will have been unable to auscultate your chest so it will have been prescribed in case it is a chest infection, and to prevent you ending up with pneumonia./ needing a hospital admission due to increased oxygen requirements. If you have any health conditions (diabetes, pregnancy , asthma, obesity etc) then the risk is even higher.

AlwaysBelieve19 · 02/10/2020 19:44

Oh okay I understand but I thought yellow Phlegm was normal it's when it turns to green it's worrying & ain't coughing up phlegm with a cold normal anyway ?

Have you had a COVID test more importantly.

dementedpixie · 02/10/2020 19:48

Why did you make an appointment then? And yes a cough would require a covid test

Frappuccinofan · 02/10/2020 19:49

The GP is just trying to help you. If you don’t want to take them, don’t collect the prescription.

FrankiesKnuckle · 02/10/2020 19:54

Taking one will do the equivalent of fuck all.
Take the course.
Or don't, your choice.

AlwaysBelieve19 · 02/10/2020 19:56

Don't have covid as I took the test & all I was doing was asking Bec I didn't have the symptoms of a chest infection never said I weren't going to take them

I cough up green and yellow phlegm routinely. This thing about green = infection is nonsense. See for example: www.health.harvard.edu/blog/dont-judge-your-mucus-by-its-color-201602089129

If it were me - and there are no other pertinent facts you haven't mentioned (like you’ve had a raging fever for five days) - I wouldn’t take them.

userxx · 02/10/2020 20:23

I'm confused, why are you taking up an appointment if you suspect you have just a cold? I'd say as face to face appointments aren't happening the doctors are being perhaps overly cautious, better that then having no antibiotics and ending up much worse down the line.

userxx · 02/10/2020 20:24

How did I end up up in pregnancy 😱. Thought it was chat. As you were.

Callybrid · 02/10/2020 20:28

I only just noticed this is in pregnancy section. Assuming you are pregnant, and not posting in this section accidentally, perhaps the Dr is being over cautious. I was prescribed antibiotics when pregnant because I told her I had some pain in my ribs and she said there was a possibility it was a chest infection.

I didn’t take the ABs, and I worked out a day or so later I’d just been wearing a bra that was far too tight...

BUT in your case, seriously what I would do is ring the surgery and ask for a call back and ask the Dr to explain why they have been prescribed. There might be a really good reason that she forgot to mention, or she might say it’s just for the very remote chance that it’s a bacterial infection, in which case they would just be for if you were very anxious about that and wanted to take ABs for reassurance. No harm in trying to get a better answer off Dr anyway - none of us can really tell you!

AlwaysBelieve19 · 02/10/2020 20:29

If I call my gp it's to get their second opinion on things for example I thought he was going to say get some cough medicine or whatever I never said him giving me antibiotics was bad that's a good thing because he's looking into my best interests I was just confused Bec I thought coughing up phlegm when you had a cold anyway was normal ... I already took the antibiotics anyway just incase because it's better to be on the safe side

I'm 25weeks pregnant btw sorry I didn't state it before

AlwaysBelieve19 · 02/10/2020 20:33

I even think the antibiotics have worked somewhat as I haven't been coughing up phlegm I don't know if it's the antibiotics or just my cold running it's course I now have a dry cough
